Should I upgrade my car?

Post by nineseven »

Another car thread!

I have a 2010 Hyundai i10 which I love. However it has nearly 60k miles on the clock now although there is nothing else wrong with it. I just took it in to repair its vandalised windscreen wiper  and the garage man says they have a 2012 one coming in with 20k miles on the clock. It's £4,000 and they could give me about £2,000 for mine.

Do you think 60k miles is a good time to swap for a slightly newer model? I don't know very much about cars!

Is it petrol or diesel? High mileage is less important in diesels, I bought mine when it had 50k miles and it’s still going strong on 85k. My brother said not to think about mileage until it’s over 100k and I basically believe anything he tells me [about cars, as it’s his job].

I don't think 60k for an 8 year old car is that much really. Does it otherwise run ok or is it starting to have a string of issues?

No issues at all! OK, that's good to know.

It's petrol, Squirrel (although you seem to have dropped off mid sentence!)

Ah you have edited! Thanks. What does he say about petrol cars' mileage?

Spending £2k to get something only two years newer doesn't seem like a great investment to me. Okay the mileage is low, but yours is also pretty low.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about cars.

That sounds sensible.

I think I just got excited about having a car in a nice new colour :))

I also know nothing about cars, but you know yours is in good condition/reliable, whereas the newer car will be an unknown quantity.

Sorry fat fingers posted before I finished typing.

Isn’t <10k Miles a year considered to be low mileage? So 10k would be average and yours is comfortably under. I have absolutely no idea where I got this figure from, mind you.

He just wants to get £2k out of you! I wouldn't swap for that deal.

He doesn't, honestly. I was the one asking about if they had any newer ones in. He never brought it up.

I wouldn’t just yet personally. Hyundais are very reliable and if you get it serviced then I think you’d usually have a warning before anything went wrong.

In Baku they used to drive 100k plus so I never worry about mileage.

I don't think that car can be worth double of yours. Maybe 1200 but not 2k.
