I mean they must, even if it's not traditional, they have the internet, they can see there are other things to be done to a potato. Surely.

Yes  I’m sure the USA isn’t roast potato free! People make them, it’s just not traditional for thanksgiving or Christmas.

I asked Mr J when people here eat roasted potatoes and he said with steak. But commented that Americans love their mashed potatoes. Oh and potatoes au gratin.

This is that thing where you see a certain stereotype of the norm in tv shows and that seems like that’s all there is. Jet defends America: part 5239

I Googled the roast potato question earlier, and my favourite answer said that Americans will argue really strongly that they do make them, but they don’t :mog:.

I think it might depend on who. If I ask my mil (who cooks like it’s the 70s) and that’d be a no. Ask my keen cook of a bil and he probably makes them more than me.

I often make my mum cook them when she’s here or were there because hers are way better than mine :))

I also just quizzed Mr J some more and his definition of roast potatoes is quite broad too so...:uhh: :))

What do Americans think roast potatoes are?

Not wedges, I don’t think Mr J has ever made a wedge  Just potatoes that are roasted in the oven. He was talking about ones with oil and herbs rather than proper roasties.

I can’t speak for the rest of America, obvs.

Or diced and roasted with garlic, oil and rosemary.

I know they don’t count in the context of this discussion. It just got a bit lost in translation when I asked the question.

Lots of places here serve them with breakfast and call them breakfast potatoes. I’m not sure I knew they had a real name; I’m not sure what I call them aside from maybe rosemary potatoes as I usually use rosemary.

I would count them as a roast potato to a limited degree; I would have them for Sunday dinner but not for Xmas dinner.

I was googling Thanksgiving like a demon last night and I stumbled across a blog that claimed British people had Yorkshire pudding with Christmas dinner. Written by British people. So I think trying to nail down exactly what a national dish is is futile because there's always some perverted outliers doing weird shit.

I didn't really realise there was a potluck scenario involved with Thanksgiving, which explains a lot of my queries. And there is a definite 70s-recipe-nostalgia vibe about the whole thing. I would love to have a massive Thanksgiving feast.

I knew about potluck thanksgiving! I have never experienced the marshmallow sweet potato stuff though. I always feel a bit sorry for Americans and their holiday food. They (Not All Americans) really look down on British food though. :))

Share the recipe, Mayday! :weewee:

We actually commented that Thanksgiving was the first time we’d had proper roast potatoes in ages!

Breakfast potatoes aren’t the same at all.
