I've never read any modern Japanese fiction (the translation is very good) so found the cultural references fascinating.
Oh, I looked at this a couple of weeks ago! Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I might offer it up as a birthday idea

I finished The Walnut Tree, and it was excellent and depressing. Attitudes to women are so deep-seated and it was really revealing.

My sister has saved the last Dormouse copy of Butter for me. She says it’s out of stock at her wholesalers now.

I finished No One Saw A Thing, it was a bit far fetched but I liked it.

Now on London Rules, the 5th Slow Horses book, I bought the last 4 when they were on special.

I have just started The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. Amazon tells me I bought this on my Kindle in 2013 but I don't remember the story at all.

Pip, The Walnut Tree sounds like the sort of book I know I should read, but would just fuel my Female Rage.

I'm now on Slow Horses book 6, they're ideal for being sick, easy to read and non taxing.

I've started the 1st Slow Horses book - really like the writing style.

Can't wait to see the Tattooist of Auschwitz TV series, even though I do have some reservations about turning such a personal story into a televised dramatisation. On the other hand, if it gets the story across to all the people that don't read, then that's a good thing. I've read all her books but this one left the biggest impression on me.

I'm on Slow Horses 5, after being mildly traumatised by 4. :))

I'm just about to start Slow Horses 3 which I am alternating with a romance series that is borderline porn.

I've just finished Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life by Anna Funder which is a biography of George Orwell's first wife who was essentially written out of his life story. Some of it is quite 'interpretive' and bordering on historical fiction but those bits are clearly signposted and overall I thought it was brilliant and really enjoyed it.

Did you read Restless Dolly Maunder yet? I was annoyed by it until I got to the very end. The sense of place & time was really good, but Dolly irritated me. Then I realised the story behind the story and I liked it a lot more for that.

Yes, I read it just before and was just thinking I must see if you had finished. I thought it was very surface level, it really felt like it should have been much more epic than it actually was, if that makes sense, a proper 900 page doorstopper. I don't know if that was just the setting though. I did like the whole backstory.

I'm about to start Brotherless Night as someone else has reserved it so I need to read it next.

Ok, I’ll make it my next one! :dotty:

I’m reading Dog at the moment. Rob Perry was so cute.

RDM was really superficial, you’re right. Then we bought this pub, then this pub, then that pub, then the house… it was just a series of events.

Me too. I think R would really enjoy it too, but he won't use a Kindle. I might treat him to a paper copy.

Unfortunately, he won't read an electronic book at all. It's paper or nothing. :))

I’ve just finished Truly, Madly, Guilty by Liane Moriarty. It was good but I figured out the “what happened” way before the reveal. I’m now ready a trashy one my mum sent me called Whips by Cleo Watson. It’s very Jilly Cooper.

I do like how Liane Moriarty does her reveals though, she doesn’t make you wait until the end.
