So the House has voted to impeach him. Can someone explain what this means now? This is a good thing isn’t it? With the exception of the potential civil unrest as a result?

17 republicans are required to vote with democrats. Just said on CNN.

It goes to a senate trial next but the Republican Senate Leader has said that won’t be before Trump leaves office. Even if the trial then succeeds, it doesn’t bar him from standing for a second term in ‘24, that needs a separate senate vote. I’m not sure if he loses his $200k pa presidential pension if the trial succeeds or if that’s dependent on the separate vote.

Conviction wouldn’t mean losing pension, security, travel budget etc. It’s all dependent on a second senate vote.

The fact he’s the only president ever to be impeached twice has got to be infuriating for him. Especially as he can’t spill his bile anywhere meaningful.

If he is found guilty his two banks won't do any more business with him and the loans are due in the next two years. 300 million to one bank alone...

This was a very good result. Now it goes to the Senate. It's going to a be a very scary week here, but I'm more hopeful for the future than I've been in the last four years.

I'm really settling in for this. I'm being positive and hoping it will only be bad for Trump and his heinous family rather than more violence for America.

Surely something good has to happen this year?

The thing is, that fucker has whipped his moronic followers up to the point that violence was, and sadly remains, inevitable.

But the looming threat of repeated violence shouldn't be seen as a result of anyone's actions but his and those of the GOP for the past 4 years, the impeachment attempt should absolutely go ahead.

I've switched to the OAN now and...oh my. I've never watched this 'news' network before but it is absolutely staggering what they have the nerve to say. The presenters sound like they're drunk/on drugs for starters.

And as Ella said before they only need 2/3s vote in the senate of those present to convict him. So if GOP reps don’t show up and Dems do in force then it’s easier. I’m not sure how likely that is though. And he can go to trial while not in office, the main purpose, apart from holding him accountable for the violent insurrection and deaths, being to pave the way to bar him from future office and privileges. Post-conviction, the senate can vote for that by a simple majority (which the Dems would obviously now carry).

It didn’t seem like much but I hadn’t realize how significant 10 Republicans voting with the Dems to impeach was in the House. If only the same thing could be done for Johnson. I know I’m in a liberal bubble but my echo chamber is very pro-impeachment. I stopped at a wine shop on my way home and the owner had opened champagne to celebrate the House result (people were drinking outside).
