The covid situation could have played out differently if Johnson had got rid of Cummings after Barnard Castle. All that energy and bullshit wasted on protecting him when it turns out that he’s dispensable anyway.

Friday 13th has clearly been on some sort of course to rebrand itself.

It's still breaking news on the BBC, and was announced by Laura K, using the phrase 'with immediate effect', which seems a bit loaded.

I think that leak enquiry was the last straw.

Turns out we’re all dispensable. At least 50,000 of us.

Interesting that Sajid Javid is being touted as the new chief of staff.

Thank god. Although I'm so burnt by the last four years that I'm still somehow expecting a dark twist.

I loathe him and Trump equally, with Johnson a close second so this is not a bad November thus far.

I must admit I’m not that excited about Cummings leaving, it’s certainly not in the same league as Trump. It feels like he’s done all the damage and there’s just no point hanging around.

I wonder how things would have played out - for the Brexit negotiations and for Covid - if Johnson had had a backbone and sacked Cummings after the Barnard Castle fiasco.

ETA Edith I’m not ignoring you! I was thinking along the same lines but more slowly.

Yes, I'm glad to see the back of him of course, but it feels like he's just weaseling out before he's held accountable for how bad Brexit is. And he's got off some bullying enquiry or other by leaving.

Yes! This has irked me all day. It was SUCH a kick in the face to so many people who sacrificed so much in a spirit of national unity and effort, and they pissed away so much good will to keep him, just for him to leave with immediate effect over something most people (including me) can't really grasp 6 months later.

Leaving the office with a box is a cliche from a movie. There’s something weird going on here.

I've just said exactly that - it's like Eastenders characters putting all their possessions into a bin liner.

Someone 100% tipped off the press for that photo op too given the number of flashes. He could have left with no one noticing if he wanted to.
