Your MIL sounds like she's fully lost the plot, Pip. I totally agree that no-one should stay in an unhappy relationship if they want to get out, but she has to be realistic about the impact on the wider family.

Yeah, BIL met him. It’s really upset SIL for various (justified) reasons.
FIL seems really relaxed and chill. He stayed for dinner and it was fine. He said he wishes her well and she seems really smitten by the new man (which might explain her lack of clarity in thinking).
