I had a ruck with SB1's school about the price of uniform and the lack of places to buy it (one place with MASSIVE queues).

Induction day today! I walked J and two friends up there this morning and they asked if I could come and meet them after too. Little loves! SO not ready.

I hope they have fun.
T had 3 days last week, big bus and everything. I wasn't even allowed to the bus stop.

He’s had a great day and is absolutely full of it! Mostly about the lunch, to be fair.

Squeak seems really happy. She got the house she wanted (Twickenham), and a good friend from her current school is in her mentor group, and a boy from rugby that she knows. We need to sort out locking the door properly; MrMcLip says he’d trust Chunk more than her to lock up.

I'm glad it went well for her. Hannah's was very positive too and she made some friend's. She's been given homework to do over the summer.

We're not going to need her to let herself in/out just yet but I would be worried about her with keys too!

We had an induction evening tonight and I feel really quite chilled about it all right now, thankfully. Her mentor group teacher is cute and offered his email address to us all.

What is a mentor group teacher? Like a form teacher? This is a world I know nothing about.

Yes, but they have “vertical mentor groups” which means that for registration & PHSE (?) they have a mix of years 7,8&9 together. I think it’s a nice idea. The school is moving towards 11-16 provision from the current 11-14, so I’m not sure if they’ll expand the mentor groups as they go upwards.

Oh, her school stops at 14? That's unusual, isn't it?

That vertical mentor thing sounds like a brilliant idea!

That does sound good. Good luck to all the new secondary schoolers.

Joe is going next year. He's one of the youngest in his year, and I think it's really going to show. He's excited, I'm not :))

Leicestershire is a really really strange place. High school used to be 10-14, so if I’d grown up here, I would have gone up in year 6! Thankfully they’re aligning to the rest of normality but hopefully we’ll keep the earlier finish in the summer because that’s useful for cheaper holidays. ;)

Oh, interesting! So what were you supposed to do at aged 14 then, previously?

I had a weird system growing up; primary from reception to year 4, middle school from year 5 to year 8 then 'the grammar school'* from year 9 to year 13. Starting big school at year 9 was quite nice, the year 7s seem so tiny.

*It was only ever called this, never 'high school'.

We still have this in Frome but none of the surrounding areas.

It’s high school then whatever they call the next school for 14-18. It’s called Xxxxxx college now. I’m never really needed to know about it before.

She’s just revealed to me that she found out her class for lessons today, which is different to mentor group but has her mentor group’s yr 7s and other yr 7s in it.

How have the first days gone? J’s only had one but got homework already! He’s still very excited about the whole thing although he’s been given Latin. :))
