Yes, absolutely. Sometimes it's beyond anyone's control, for example they do close units when there aren't enough staff, but barring that it's the woman's choice. Likewise women being told there aren't sufficient midwives for a home/water birth; it's the Trust's responsibility to provide one.

Similarly, 111 can't withhold permission for you to go to a specific A&E. It might take longer without a referral, for example, but if you turn up to an (open) emergency department with a broken ankle, they're going to treat you.

I'm not saying anyone shouldn't listen to advice, but ask the reasons. If it impacts you, then fine, but if it's more convenient for the doctors and midwives (or "policy"), that's not your problem.

Congratulations, Tits!
It’s like a normal midlife crisis only with more chandeliers and foreign languages.

I bet L can't wait, she's going to be such a great wee help for you.

That’s really helpful, thanks Lora. My only worry is that it’s a much smaller, older hospital than the alternative, and if there were any complications with the birth I’d rather be somewhere with squads of people and shiny new high tech equipment. :l: I did really like my midwife when I met her at my booking in appointment earlier this week though, and the hospital was really quiet and calm.

L has been reading her old books to the baby already, Rhod.

Tits, my friend had both her kids at the RAH, and I think she found them fine. The kids are 2 and 5 so this was relatively recent.

That’s really reassuring! I haven’t outed myself to the school mums yet, so I haven’t been able to ask anyone about their experiences there.

I am genuinely going to be a bit disappointed when it turns out to be just one. It's very early days though so even getting one out of it would be brilliant. I am too excited to not share with someone other than P though.
