So Cube is going to Iceland next year and now today Betty has come home with a letter for a French trip (£500) and Elf a residential (£300).

Obviously I've said yes to one of them so I'm going to have to find it for the other two at the most difficult time ever.

Or they all get to go on one trip each during their school years and they get to choose to go now or maybe they choose to wait for a more Icelandy one in a few years

This is how we have pitched it in previous years. It works and it gives them a degree of control too.

She won't be doing Iceland as she's not taking Geography. There's no other trips available in the GCSE years.

Elf has missed out on so many trips because of Covid so I'm not sure. Hopefully he won't want to go anyway as he's a homebody.

Honestly I would happily say no to all of them except maybe the residential. Iceland isn't necessary for GCSE Geography and no-one can find that kind of money for all of them. The French trip and the residential aren't unreasonably priced, and I know people worry about missing out, but the vast majority of kids at secondary won't be going on those.

Iceland has already been partly paid for although he absolutely does not deserve it. I’d happily rehome him most days.

I’ve been decluttering today and found a box of L’s old school books including his year 7 planner. July was an interesting month

I’d borrowed them from a friend. He had them for a school project so it’s not quite as random as it sounds

We have a bunch of high school open nights coming up for B. He isn't applying until next year, but we literally have no idea where it would be best for him to go, so it seems wise to scout around now rather than leave it until application deadlines are looming. He has four different schools that are viable options (two local with school bussing, two we'd have to drive him but we already drive R anyway). Sticking with friends has become really complicated, as their unofficially-elected homeschool has been removed as an option. It's been a weird political decision within the school board. So his friends will probably be more scattered as a result, although they can still apply through a lottery system or specialist music program which some of them probably will do.

If he had to pick today, he said he wants to go to the same school as R. I'm having a hard time seeing him there though, but nobody else shares my opinion.

Anyone else dithering over high schools?

TBL got a place at H's school. The Baby Liam is going to Secondary school in September!.

It's hard, Little My. H went to a school that none of her friends went to and only one other child from her school who she didn't like. It was tricky at the beginning but she's now in year 11 and has done so well. Z chose an all girls school that her best friend was going to. I don't think it's as good as H's school but she's happy and doing really well. TBL chose the same school as H, the local mixed comp.

I am glad to ultimately have let them choose, I think it's important.

How is Chunk getting on in big school?

He kind of loves it, but is having the odd teething issue still. He’s finding his feet, definitely. He is also still a baby (mine).
