Million in one trikes

Are the trikes that can be used from a young age in different configurations a good buy?

Quite a few seem to be useable from Topsy and Tim's age so I'm contemplating getting them now. Will they find being pushed in one much more exciting than being in the buggy or will it just seem the same to them?

Also, I'm thinking it'll be good for when P is with me and we can have one each and go some routes that are too narrow for the double pushchair -do they tend to be ok off road in a field/grass footpath/gravel etc or are they just for pavements/tarmac?

Any specific recommendations also welcome! In normal times I'd go to a shop and try some out but I don't really want to at the moment.

We had something like this - https://www.thetoyshop.com/baby-pre-sch ... lsrc=aw.ds

I *think* I took it to the woods but can’t be certain. I’d be inclined to say it’s better on pavements, footpaths and short grass than proper off-road. I’ve seen sturdier looking ones but they tend to be for older children.

We had a smart trike and Beebie loved it. We tested a few in the shop and chose the one that was easiest to steer. It was definitely less hassle than the pram at times. I don't remember using it to walk off pavements though, we used the Ergobaby for anything like that.

We had the older version of this for E, we used it from him being 11 months old (he got it for Christmas). He preferred it to the pushchair, and still likes it now. We use it on some gnarly paths that we wouldn’t be able to take our pushchair down, and it copes pretty well. I wouldn’t use it on proper country paths though.

Thanks, that all sounds positive!

What are the sunshades or canopies like? I can't work out if ones with a canopy like Suzi's are much better than the shades on the little tikes or similar?

We barely used our sun canopy but I can see on a day like today that it would be useful!

My two loved their trikes, but had the unfortunate habit of putting their feet on the floor instead of the foot holders which made the steering go all wonky. :lg:

Dande, my two have done the same. They loved being pushed around on the trike, but were constantly dragging their feet on the floor, ruining their shoes :lg:.

We have this one https://www.fruugo.co.uk/little-tikes-4 ... ogQAvD_BwE and whilst Tupac and Biggie have enjoyed/do enjoy it, I do find it quite heavy to steer, but maybe I have pathetic wrists  and I don’t think I’d take it out for the day instead of a pram as there’s no napping capability and both of mine seem to knock themselves out whenever they are in transit so I wouldn’t fancy managing a tired child somewhere if they couldn’t just nap in the pram.

Tupac has a balance bike now which he loves and uses loads so the whole 4 in 1 aspect of that one is wasted really as it’s too heavy still for him to pedal and I don’t think we will really bother with the other one with Biggie, apart from the odd mooch around the garden/to the park (if it ever opens and A can be on steering  )

Yeah I don't know anyone who has used all the configurations, or indeed any apart from the one where you push and steer it. Maybe with two they might push each other a bit if you're lucky.

Well you say that but A has just put Biggie in it (how strange after not bothering for ages  ) and Tupac tried to push him and nearly toppled him over sideways :panic: I don’t think I’d have bothered with it to be honest, in hindsight. Sorry Ken, not helpful :look: maybe don’t get the one I’ve got

Hmmm, now I'm not sure!

We wouldn't use it for actual days out, more just for walks every so often to give them a bit of variety now that they're a bit resistant to napping in the pushchair so I was thinking they might find it more fun. But it's definitely not good value if they won't use it later as an actual trike. :puzz:

They are a huge plastic eyesore too. I’ve never had a house big enough to take one and a buggy. And you’d need two! Imagine the space they’d take up :emme:

Sproglette definitely used hers as a trike.

I walked to the shop and back once a couple of years ago with Tupac and it was hard work, and it’s probably under a mile round trip  I just find it really heavy going, and I don’t think joy wise it’s any different from being forward facing in a pram, plus if they want out, they want out, and then you are left trying to control a small person with no safety skills and a clunky massive trike thing

And trying to carry your shopping, if you made it that far!

Yes! At least a pram has shopping storage and can be pushed one handed whilst you attempt to grip onto the small person trying to break free

There are big variations in manoeuvrability, based on our trials in the toy shop at the time. Ours was fine one handed and I could comfortably have walked a couple of miles with it. I wouldn't buy one without test driving a few first.

Storage isn't a problem as they could just go in the garage with our bikes, or in the outbuilding bit of the house.

I saw a woman in the park today walking a dog, pushing a child on a trike and with an older child on a balance bike. She said it was easy to push round the park etc, even in the wooded bit with lots of roots on the ground and that she could do it one handed quite easily. Annoyingly I forgot to ask the make but think it might have been Little Tikes.

We have a trike!

It is pretty easy to push, we went to the zoo and the only time I had any issues was on gravel, and to be fair I hate pushing my pushchairs on gravel. They both seemed to really enjoy it and the one in the pushchair looked on sadly while the other had their turn. ;) I think they can see a lot more than in the pushchair, even when upright.

It's so much easier pushing one as well!

Excellent! I loved ours so I'm glad you got one and they are enjoying it.
