I am wearing shoes in my house right now but I’ve not walked on carpet in them and do prefer to take them off at the door. It was laziness tonight.

I have shoes for indoors but I don’t make visitors take them off. I have a robot mop and a cat that thinks nothing of dancing footprints across the stupid white tiles we have in the kitchen and hall.

It has taken nearly 2 years, but a landowner has finally agreed to mend the lock on a gate in a public right-of-way that they own. A councillor asked them to mend this in June 2023. She contacted the council a year ago when a dog ran through the broken gate onto the road and was hit (£10k vet bills!). The council said - in an email copied to the developer - that they agreed with the developer, that the onus was on the public not to run through the broken gate onto the busy road, and that a new structure would need to be authorised and that gaps were easier for everyone. I won't bore you with the ins & outs; suffice to say it is clear neither the landowner nor the council had actually bothered their arses to go and inspect the sodding bloody gate. Despite my taking numerous photographs and pointing out that the gate was BROKEN and the identical one at the other end of the field, ironically leading to a very quiet footpath, had a LOCK, the landowner said they weren't going to sort the gate and stopped replying to our emails in the end. I had enough, looked up the CEO of the developer and complained to them with photographs, saying that I was disappointed by their lack of care to the community given they call themselves a "responsible developer". Lo and behold, within 24 hours my complaint was escalated and the person in charge said that based on my photographs alone they could see the gate needed repair and will arrange for the lock to be mended.

I told the council woman this and she replied today, "Good news, I have reminded them about the lock several times".

What she conveniently forgets is that earlier on this email trail she wrote to the developer saying "I agree with the developer, a new structure would need to be authorised, the onus is on people to look after their dogs". So why did she "remind them about the lock" if she agreed with the landowner that the gate wasn't meant to lock by design (it is - don't get me started) and thought a whole new gate was needed? That email from her gave the L/O full permission to do fuck alll until I went to the big boss. If she had reminded them about the lock why hadn't they done anything? How firm had her "reminders" been?

It has taken me about 40 minutes to draft a very polite "confused" response to her email reminding her of this without sounding rude. I also said that it is "significantly disappointing" that it has taken since June 2023 to get this resolved, only through our (my) strenuous effort, and I felt that council backing (and if they''d actually bothered to go and see the gate) would have gained us this resolution earlier.

This. I usually take them off quite soon after getting in as I don't put shoes on the furniture, but I never ask guests to take their shoes off to enter the house.

Same. I insist on shoes off upstairs, but downstairs I'm not too bothered if people keep their shoes on. We have all hard floors anyway, so easy enough to clean.

Plus, I really don't want to see my visitors' socks. I really hate socks. They give me the ick.

I was brought up to count shoes as part of my clothing. So, yes, I always put shoes on. R doesn't though. He wears leather flip-flop type slippers around the house and it drives me mad that, if I ever ask him to do anything outside ... get something out of the boot of the car, empty a bin, fill a bird feeder, etc., there's a whole performance around, "wait a sec, I'll go and put my shoes on". Why couldn't you just put your shoes on in the first place?!

Maybe it's more usual to take shoes off if you have carpets. R's kids all take their shoes off inside, but their houses are all carpeted. We have wood and flagstones. I don't think many take their shoes off inside, here. I've never noticed it particularly.

We are definitely shoes off at the front door household. Slippers in winter and barefoot in summer. I would not ask a visitor to remove shoes but most of my friends just do.

Admirable but it’s not your fight to have. Let someone else do it for a change. You’ve got so much going on and you’re in need of a break. This is definitely one of those balls that you need to drop for a bit. This kind of thing I mean, I appreciate you’ve won this one. But let the next one go, you need a break!
