Hertz has filed for bankruptcy.

I think 2020 will be the year of businesses dying.

Hertz always makes me think of my dad. There was a comedy sketch that he loved which Google suggests may have been Russ Abbott, with a character called Hertz Van Rental. That has given me a big pang.

Aww, Tony Scannell died. He was Ted Roach in the Bill.

I feel like there literally won't be any shops left by the end of this. I bloody loved accessorise

I think it had been pushed out to an extent by Oliver Boney Arse, but definitely still had its place.

You're right, it will be an even weirder high street than it has been when this is all over. I'm not sure how many more fast food joints and charity shops this town can take.

I got an email yesterday saying they’d restructured.

I got that too, PIp. I love Monsoon, I get a fair amount of clothes from there

It definitely wasn't without fault (too expensive at times - places like lovisa offered something quite similar for half, or less, of the price) and I know there's other places which do a similar (like OB) but some of my favourite earrings came from there. Nice things, decent quality etc. I never really got into Monsoon, mind you.

Aww, we were just admiring picture of the Monsoon dress I got married in. I also had an amazing trench coat from there that I donated to charity as it was too big then I grew back into that size. :ella: I used to like their children’s clothes but they were expensive on the cost to wear ratio!

But I hadn’t bought anything for years. :look:

ETA - ah yes, it was bought again in 2 hours so hasn’t completely gone.

They did a lot of deals, I rarely bought anything full price from it!

I have quite a lot of lovely clothes from Monsoon. Since they closed the local branches though, it’s been harder to shop there. But they always did good online service.

It will be really interesting to see what happens to retail over the next few years. Economists are predicting that office-based work will be done remotely to a far greater extent in future (the genie is out of the bottle now in terms of people demonstrating they can work remotely and businesses will not be slow to realise that cutting their office footprint down will save a lot of costs), and that means fewer customers in central offices, so fewer businesses needed to support them. Conversely, this could be a real boon for local shops as homeworkers will make more use of locals shops, restaurants and cafes etc.

I’ve never really forgiven them for the “pretty clothes for ugly women” thing.

That sounds positive Liv. What a great thing if local independent businesses take over from the big ones. I was thinking that the other day: if people have more time and flexibility we're likely to make the effort to go to a butcher, a baker, a candle stick maker, rather than a supermarket out of town.

What now?

I've never bought anything from Monsoon apart from a bridesmaids dress I hated.
