Lottery syndicate - WWYD?

I’ve been the organiser of a lottery syndicate for a few years. There were 9 of us originally, one person left a year ago and then someone else left about 6 months ago. People transfer me £10 a month and I buy 9 tickets a week. I didn’t ever get round to reducing the number of tickets when people left so I still pay for 9 tickets a week even though only 7 people now play.

We’re going to wind the syndicate up now and I’m trying to work out what to do with the pot of winnings.

I’ve worked out what 1/9th of the pot was when the first person left, what 1/8th was when the second person left and then I’ve split the current balance 7 ways.

I think this is the most equitable way of doing it, as it’s definitely my fault that I haven’t changed the direct debit and continued to pay for two extra tickets a week so the other option of splitting the pot 9 ways and me taking 3/9th seems wrong, but then everyone else has been benefitting from two extra tickets per week…

It makes about £15 difference - the pot would be about £75 per person split 7 ways and £60 per person split 9 ways.

WWYD?

Have the leavers already had their share of winnings?

Could all syndicate members agree to a one off bet or meal out?

I’m not 100% sure what I’d do, could you ninth the winnings and donate £30 to a charity and that way you’d all end up with the same?

Do the others know you’ve been paying for extra lines?

It’s not £15 difference though to you, is it? It’s £75 v £180, if I’ve read that right.

Yeah it is a big difference for me which is why I don’t think I feel comfortable with it!

Somebody pointed out I was paying extra when the first person left and I said I’d sort it out. So it really is my error/laziness!

I think I’ll just split the pot 7 ways and be done with it.

That’s what I’d do!

The third option would be to take back the cost of 2 extra tickets for as many weeks as you paid extra then divide the rest by 7.

Just to say thanks for all your advice, I just split the pot 7 ways in the end. I did say that if we won millions in the few remaining draws that I reserved the right to claim 3/9th of the prize though :))

I’m just pleased it’s all over and done with now!
