The Mock Turtle

In a fit of madness a couple of years ago I bought two summer dresses that I really like, pretty colours and fabrics, lined, nice details. However, as I soon realised, they are completely unwearable alone, due to exposing an indecent amount of bosom.

They are of this sort of style, vaguely although the front is not smocked, only the back:





A strapless bra would still be visible, so is there any sort of top I could wear underneath them? I fear that I will just end up looking like Daphne Moon in early episodes of Frasier / Phoebe from Friends.

I used to love that look. It meant I didn't have to wear a cardigan. :wistful: I think it might be dead now though.

You might be able to get away with a thin vest underneath but with slightly wider straps? So it covers more IYSWIM. A complimentary colour could work well. I would avoid a T shirt, that would be too 90s.

I would wear a t shirt under it. Try, it and if you think it looks nice, wear it. I don't think layering is out of fashion at all.

I wouldn't layer it personally. But then I would just let my bra straps show if I really couldn't wear a strapless one with it

This is an important question. Really hot? Ooh, that nice dress I never wear! Shit. My boobs are making a bid for freedom.

My very thin fashionable colleague wears tshirts under dresses like this, but on her it's Kate Moss, whereas on me I fear the Daphne.

I usually go for a vest in these scenarios. Hang it, whatever makes you comfortable.

It's not for me, but try it and see. You're in France anyway, they might have different rules.

Just from reading the title made me think mid-90s. :)) I remember wearing "bodies" under strappy empire line dresses.

I also remember it from the 90s, it was a look I wore a lot but I fear it might look a bit dated now, it was so of it's time that it's hard not to think 90s when you see it. :))

I loved all that in the 90's, pretty cotton printed dresses with buttons down the front, and long flowy skirts.

The nineties are totally back! I wouldn't wear a t-shirt underneath though (and this is the girl who wore a see-through t-shirt under her graduation ball formal dress ) but I would go with a nice bra whose straps you don't mind showing, and/or a thin vest with strapless bra.

You can get those bras that they advertise at 3am that double as tops. Aah Bras or something :HelpfulFashionAdvice:
