Definitely a phone thing, and I very much like mooching about with my hands in my pockets.
I often have a pen in my pocket, various tablets, a tissue, daily contact lense so I don't forget to put it in.
What I hate most are those faux pockets or one where you can only get half a phone in. At work I need pockets for both phones when I'm seeing clients in the office.
I have a book called Radical Sewing that tells you how you can add pockets to most clothing

I don’t use pockets much either & definitely not around the house, although they are nice to have.

Also I think my home is too small for me to need pockets

I like pockets but I don’t use them. I never cut the stitches in pockets so I leave them sealed up.

I generally leave the house these days armed only with a key and a phone so pockets are a must. All of my bags are languishing forlornly in a cupboard.

I use a bag most of the time but I still like pockets, mainly for mooching around as Marth describes. I do use them for my phone too.

Why would pockets be a children thing?
I think I pretty much always take a bag out with me - keys, phone, card holder, facemask, antibac and a couple of reusable shopping bags. What do bagless people do with their reusable shopping bags??!!

All of the above uses, and I’m often alone at work & need to lock the office if I go to the loo, so pockets are very useful for keys. I like them for teaching too, so I can keep a flipchart pen handy & stop myself being over expressive with my hands.

These days, I go shopping in the car so they all live in the boot.

I have never lost the childhood habit of putting stuff in pockets. Pyjamas with pockets are the best.

My main needs are tissue and phone. But also putting hands in pockets when standing around or walking.

I think pockets in an elasticated waist skirt could be an issue. I say this as somebody who steps on the hem and flashes my pants without additional weight in the skirt.
It’s a very nice skirt.

I don't go shopping these days unless it's planned, so I would then either just hold the shopping bag until I got to the shop/have it in the car/ bring a bag to hold it.
And actual physical shopping is only about once every three or four months these days.

Same here. I haven't used a bag for going out for months on end now.

I did wonder if this was a big house thing
I’ve also got a couple of very small crossbody bags that are just big enough for a phone & keys, which are very handy for just nipping out somewhere. Shopping bags live in the car so I can just grab one if I need one.

Also, I get very nervous for people who walk about in public with their phone in their back pocket

I am a childfree pocket needer. I don't have a big house (lol) but I like to be able to put things in my pockets to help me carry more stuff. It's less of a going-out need and more of a staying-in need.
Unfortunately most of my new pyjamas don't have pockets, which was an oversight.

My best pyjama shorts (uniqlo) have pockets - good deep ones too.
I specifically bought a pair of men's cargo trousers because a) they were long enough, b) they were cheaper and c) they have massive pockets
I rarely leave the house with a bag these days.
I do love the rainbow skirt.
