Re: Bone inlay mirrors
The Graham & Green site says:
“Exquisitely handcrafted over many weeks using techniques passed down through generations, our Mother of Pearl and bone inlay furniture range have been expertly created by skilled artisans in Udaipur, India. Individual pieces of mother of pearl or reliably sourced cow and camel bone have been skilfully carved and fixed into resin on a wooden frame to create these intricate designs. Our Mother of Pearl and bone inlay collections are a G&G signature range and is offered in a variety of colours, designs and styles.”
So real bone, yes

Real tortoise shell isn't allowed. If it's in a legit shop, and it's not antique, it's plastic.

I've got some ebony elephants with what I think are little ivory tusks. They were my great grandfathers so quite old

Re: Bone inlay mirrors
Bone china is bone?! Like Five, how did that not occur? I think I thought it just meant it was thin, like bony. These things make sense to you when you're seven and then you never have reason to think about them again.

Re: Bone inlay mirrors
I had a bad feeling about bone china but never googled to avoid exactly this feeling.
Isn't it weird how recently it was considered ok to have and want this sort of stuff? I suppose it's good I'm shocked, it means things are probably better now.

I eat meat so I'm not upset about the use of bone in other things, especially as I feel fairly confident that the bones are ones that would otherwise be thrown away after the animal is butchered.

Yeah, as PG says, if you’re going to be a carnivore and rear animals for food, the least you can do is to try and make sure you find good use for all of the parts. I know it’s a profit motive that drives these uses and not one of innate respect for the animal itself, but so long as it achieves the same end, it all helps (or at lease, harms less).

Re: Bone inlay mirrors
IS it a bi product though? That particular description says 'reliably sourced' which could mean anything.
I don't think I've necessarily got ethical objections, mind you. I'm not sure I'd want to decorate with bone. Though, I guess its only as squicky as leather

I don’t know why it’s surprised me but apparently camel meat is quite widely consumed! Blimey, the things you learn.
