Gerbil babies

Post by Lily »

As posted on FML, my boy gerbil turned out to be a girl and gave birth a week ago. Suffice to say I was shocked, but I'm also now delighted. I didn't put photos up on that thread because someone didn't like it when I did that before, and I know not everyone is a fan of rodents. But for those of you who I haven't bored to tears with these photos, here are our first week. I'm besotted.

Teeny tiny. I'm sure I've told this story before but this happened when I was a little girl and one of the babies escaped, went under the floorboards through a gap behind the loo and from there made its way behind the staircase which was the open sort with a plaster board backing. Dad had to rip the back off the staircase to rescue it and then it bit him.

So anyway make sure they can't get out.

S's friend got a 'boy' gerbil who had an incestuous relationship with a brother and was pregnant before the family got her. S ended up with one of the babies, which was the start of her run of rodent owning. I think they were gerbils, but they may have been hamsters. They were all vicious little brutes, at any rate.

ETA - yours are adorable, though, Lily. :look: Congratulations!

If they were vicious, they were DEFINITELY not gerbs.

Burtle, I feel your pain; my second gerbil escaped & hid under the floorboards. We had to take the floorboards up in my parents' bedroom and I spent a good 7 hours sitting next to the hole eating toast waiting for her to escape.

If you zoom in you can see their tiny weeny claws and their ears which haven't unfolded yet. My heart feels like it is going to burst every time I look at them.

My little bundles of happiness. I feel so dreadful and then I see their little faces and it just all gets easier to bear.

I'm aware I am being a bore about them, but they are just the best thing in my life right now. A friend of mine is taking the girls, when I get them properly sexed, and I'll keep any boys.

Look at them! How amazing to be able to watch them change from tiny bald things into actual furry gerbils.

I love the mid-colour one the most, I think, but they’re all so cute. Do they kind of play dead when you pick them up Lily or are they usually snoozy like that?
