Great news Skips- well done!

I am also secretly pleased I am not the only person who flicks V signs at old jobs / places that reject you.

Great news Skips! (Although my detail oriented mind would like to know how it's a shorter commute if you need to drive past the current place to get there - I can't help myself :)))

I am privy to some "interesting" goings-on at my old gaff, and a tiny bit of me is also revelling in schadenfreude even though I (mostly) wish them well. Its only human!

No, the place I got turned down for after jumping through hoops. Not my current place, I'll be nowhere near there.

I did wonder that also, and idly supposed that Skips would be in some weird way approaching from a different/shorter route. It didn't really make sense :))

I love a bit of previous employer goss, Del.

Congratulations Skips! That's excellent news! I'm also pleased about Del's schadenfreude.

How are you getting on Beena?
Quietly despairing, tbh. Randomly, the line manager for the pay cut job booked in to see me for advice on a task she'd been assigned. She was very sweet, but well, seemed out of her depth. :look: I decided against it.

There's nothing coming up locally. I'm not sure how much longer I might have a job. The word bleak is being bandied about more than is comfortable and I've heard proposals that make me uneasy. We're slowly coming to the conclusion that relocating again might be on the cards.

My boss asked me the other day when I'd be retiring.
I replied that that was a question to ask our government.
She then worried she'd upset me. I said no.. I'm 57 and I know it, but asked why she was asking now. Her reply was that I'm one of a kind, and to find someone to replace me she'd have to start looking now.

I think with the new retirement law I can stop working at 64. I need to check if the bonus for having had 3 children is still valid.

What kind of bonus is that Sunny? What is the difference with the old retirement law?

The bonus is less time to work until official retirement age. I seem to remember that that the old law knocked off time per child. I'm not sure if that has changed.
The old law was retirement at 62.
They changed that, and that was the cause of a lot of riots and revolting French people.

As a childfree woman I do not agree with that policy! But I do hope it’s good news for you personally :))

That is an excellent system, the child bonus! One of my colleagues has 6 kids and would love it.

Yeah, we were all laughing at the rioting French! Our retirement age keeps getting moved up - currently it stands at 67 and a bit. So rioting over retirement at 64 seemed rather laughable. Although Mr D admires the French for the way they show their discontent because the Dutch just seem to shrug and accept their fate.

I don't see why it's laughable - it's not a race to the bottom!

I shall take my three kids to France if it means I can retire early. ;)

Very true, Ken. I think it was more a form of envy - maybe if we'd rioted a bit ourselves, we wouldn't have to work till almost 70.

It seems so mad now that women's retirement age was 60 not that long ago. I wonder what promoted the child rule on France. I'm going to Google.

Oooo Googled. It's all very interesting https://www.cleiss.fr/docs/regimes/regi ... /an_3.html

I think the reason behind it was to make up for the disadvantages of maternity leave ( pausing a career, less promotion for women with children, etc). It was part of the State's move to increase the birthrate.

Surprisingly sad. I like the 'idea' of moving on, but maybe not the reality. I'm getting older and am not super motivated to start over again.

I chatted to a senior manager today who was quite open about things as her role is in the line of fire. As she's older still, she doesn't feel she has it in her to bounce back. This is the part of pushing back the retirement age I don't get. I remember my grandparents retiring. Carriage clocks, speeches, the works. I've no recent memories of colleagues reaching official retirement age. They've either left on medical grounds or been culled in the latest wave of restructure - and eked out redundancy payments/sickness benefit until their pensions kick in. I cannot imagine working as I am until I'm 67. 57 might be pushing it.

I get that. I'm 57 and do not feel bouncy at all.
I've been in my current role for 10 years. I've had a variety of roles in my career and moved about within the organisation regularly which, at the time, i loved and enjoyed the new challenges and change.
Luckily there was a bit of a shake up in 2019 that added a bit of spice to it and stopped boredom setting in.
Now I think I'm quite content to potter away at this job until I can retire, hopefully at 63, perhaps earlier if I can work out the child bonus thing.
I'm not sure I'd have the ooomph to start a whole new role these days.
