Well my second interview with the MD and someone with a made-up job title went very well, I think. They are now talking in terms of offering me a consultancy role of some sort. Do most people make things up as they go along in their jobs? :look: They seem very confident I am some sort of expert  It sounds very promising but I have no idea if I could actually do it and it would be a job role made for me.

I also need to respond to the other company's job offer but I am waiting for a job description and we need to decide on a job title.

I have been offered another job. Title and actual job description TBC though. This is a bigger company, amazing benefits package, more holiday, great career progression, very good reputation, chance of working with their other offices in the US etc. The other one is a little 20-person company without an office. But the actual work at the little one sounds more fun.

Both are super flexible re part-time etc if I want it, and just seem very keen.

This has all happened so quickly, my head in spinning. I am waiting for job descriptions for both as the roles were not advertised and have asked for more money from the latest one (the salary is currently the same).

I am nearly 42 so thinking I should probably not be prioritising "fun" work and should think about pensions etc :))

You're on fire! Are they flexible enough that you could both part time, or is it more like one day pw flexibility?

Fantastic! I was going to say do both part time!

I think I'm looking at four (or five)-day weeks - I'd rather keep one day off for my own clients anyway if I did go the PT route. The second one in particular sounds very open to ideas.

Argh decisions! Still no job description from either so I have a bit of time.

After years of going for roles and being told I don't have the right in-house experience, this has all come as something of a shock! I was beginning to think I was unemployable unless I went back into the dying world of magazines on fuck-all money.

Both job descriptions are in.

I’m going to accept Job 2 (who increased their offer too!). Not because it’s more money, but because I think the culture is a better fit and their job offer was filled with examples of how I’d learn and develop. They told me I can have as much time as I need to decide too, and are happy for me to work four days, and flexibly. Their also global so I may be able to work somewhere else in the world at some point.

Job 1 is longer hours, less holiday, basic pension and less pay and I think it would be more stressful for less satisfying work long term. I’m also not comfortable not knowing where the office will be (they don’t currently have one!) and the instability of their hospitality clients.

They didn’t mention training or developing once in their letter, which isn’t what I want to see for a career change.
It would be an amazing job for an experienced person in that industry, but I’m not one. Whereas the Job 2 role seems to want to work with my existing skills while teaching me new ones.

I think taking a job because there is more future potential is totally sensible and will keep you interested for longer, with job1 you'll be looking around in a few years once you've mastered it.

Plus, gotta be honest, after 40, pension contributions, decent holiday and all those benefits really sway one towards a company.

Massively! :granny: When I was 28 I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at shit benefits.

The job 1 job description was not appealing and didn’t seem to take my circumstances (career change) into consideration at all.
