Fair enough. It is always awful when you’ve invested time and emotion into it. There’s no nice way to be rejected. I’ve not even got to interview with the last few jobs I’ve applied for.

I just know that I don’t do this often but it is so stressful for me on the other side of it, I have felt sick at work for months over recruiting. I’m pretty crap and probably not representative though.

Sorry you find it so stressful. :( I suppose what helps (me at least) is remembering it's not actually about me. If I need to tell someone something they won't want to hear, that's not about me. If I'm on the receiving end - also not about me, albeit in a different way.

I don't know. I came away pretty positive from the rejection before this last one. It was handled with such warmth and compassion, and she actually took time to give genuine constructive feedback. I was more gutted about not getting the job after that as I think she would have been amazing to work for.

I don't feel the same way about last week. I'm annoyed with myself about a couple of things I did/didn't do, but I can learn from it and (hopefully) do better next time. I'm not impressed with how certain things were handled by them and I wouldn't apply to that particular team again. The recruiting manager came across as an arse and he then passed the shitty job of ringing round to someone else, who in turn didn't handle it very well.

Anyway, onwards and upwards. I mainly just want a job at the moment as I'm sick of filling in applications.

I've been offered a new job. Same sector, step up from my last role, research rather than teaching. Absolutely out of my comfort zone, but I'm taking that as a good thing :look: I'm excited about it, though the shine's been taken off slightly as my old employer has rules around references that are a headache in the making.

Anyway, that's my news. No more daytime telly and beans on toast.

That’s brilliant Beena! Well done. Presumably your old employers will provide the basics? Could you get an ex-colleague to do a personal reference?

Thanks Emma!

The references will be fine, but it's just a faff. I've had a (nice) email from a senior manager to say they have to send all requests via HR, who will issue a single reference, which means I need to find an acceptable 2nd referee who isn't attached to my old employer (of 20-odd years).

Congrats! The referencing thing sounds like a right pain though.

What will you be researching?

It's supporting research, Ken, rather than actually doing it. I'm an academic librarian and there's specialisms - teaching & learning or research support. It's all Open Access and bibliometrics and RDM and a world away from teaching undergrads about synonyms.

Thanks! I'm really looking forward to it. Remind me of that the first week I can't fanny about in my pjs til 10.30.

Yes. I was at my last place for nearly 20 years and have spent the last 8 weeks in elasticated waistbands. There might be tears.
