I heard a comedy suggestion earlier today that reminded me of this thread - basically we should all book holidays to somewhere we don’t really want to go, so we have the pleasure of anticipation and the relief when we inevitably can’t go :))

Although Grant ‘A66’ Schapps has told us not to book anything just yet, so...

I'm booking Benidorm tomorrow then.

I’m booking Skegness. I tried to have a day trip there once and it was the worst day out ever; I can’t think of a (much) worse holiday than a week there.

Skeg is pretty awful, but I’d happily take a day trip there right now.

I've been looking at cottages in the UK for August. It's depressing me a bit though tbh as they are ruinously expensive and, like Rebs, I don't really like holidaying in this country.

My aunt just messaged me about a "wonderful place" she stayed in the Peak District. But it's 3 grand and I already live in the fucking Peak District*.

I am thinking the North East for the castles, clean beaches and relative quiet. Any other suggestions? My friend reckons Somerset? I hate the Lake District for irrational reasons.

*1 mile outside it.

Stating the obvious somewhat, but depends where you go in Somerset. Dorset is lovely?

I keep telling myself to wait, because I can't bear to have hope and then have it taken away (we've now cancelled 5 lots of flights), and that it worked out fine last year (but then, we only booked 4nts, and we massively lucked out on the weather, and thinking about it, it cost a small fortune)

Never.

That was to Kiwi. :))

My friend lives in Dorset so I will probs go and stay with her for a couple of days anyway. I do like it but I am worried it will be so busy around Durdle Door etc. that it would be unpleasant - if I stay with my friend, we will just Ponce about in her garden and drink wine.

I don't know why my (Dorset) friend is recommending Somerset. :))

I'd be happy with an overnight in Blackpool at this stage.

I mean, some of it is pleasant, the coast is quite nice, Dunster is lovely, the Mendips and Cheddar/ Glasto etc is nice. Probably enough to do for a week. I'd rather pluck my own pubes than spend a week in Taunton or Yeovil though. Most of it I'd file under 'pleasant but unremarkable'. Obviously if your benchmark is 'anywhere that isn't within a 3 mile radius of my own home' it'd be fine, though. :))

I think the trouble with loads of Britain is its full of quaint little villages/beaches/tourist attractions which all feel unreasonably busy any time the temp goes over 15 degrees. Probably x57587482978 when we'll all have been locked up for the vast majority of the previous 18months.

I am highly amused by the idea of Yeovil or Taunton as holiday destinations.

Indeed. If you don’t know the area it’s a risk.

Talking of Dorset, we stayed in Wareham for a long weekend for my birthday a few years ago and I'm deeply annoyed that I had no idea this was just down the road. Abandoned Village! I have such a thing for those, and this one is open more than Imber.

It's only come to my notice because I just read a slightly trashy historical mystery/romance set around it.

I went there donkeys years ago, it was very cool. I've meant to revisit as an adult but keep forgetting.

I think a day trip may be in order when it's allowed.

After all of that, I've booked a cottage in Northumberland for a week in August. :)) I will go to Dorset to see my friend as well, but I'll worry about that nearer the time.
