Re: Show Us Your Food
Nice!
Here are my sweet potato biscuits, Mr J’s smoked turkey and the dinner spread. I made the gravy, the bacon braised red cabbage and the potato gratin (that didn’t reheat well, but tasted fine).
We haven’t gone near dessert yet.

Wow, Jet! What a spread (that’s such an old-fashioned word). Your sweet potato biscuits look incredible. Happy thanksgiving!

The sweet potato biscuits look so so good
We are employing the bramble method of eating our starter for lunch and we’ll have our turkey at dinner time.

It’s a bit dark for photos now but it was so good! The potatoes and roasted sprouts were amazing.

It all looks utterly amazing. I'd really like to experience a proper traditional Thanksgiving.

Here’s my mil’s pear pie. And her amazingly retro salad that she forgot to put out at lunch. There’s always one thing that gets forgotten
We had pumpkin pie, pecan pie, pear pie, apple cake and various breads like peach bread and pumpkin bread.

I am fascinated by Thanksgiving. I thought I understood the standard thing but when I was scrolling through pictures on Instagram (I know ) there were a lot of people who had random rice salad etc. all on the same plate as a roast. Someone needs to talk me through it.

Green bean casserole: the worst thing in the world.
I am loving these photos, especially the retro salad. So, layers of peas, mayo, cheese and bacon? Making notes.
I think some families have a "bring a side dish" rule so you end up the most bizarre selection of foods on the plate.

I could really go for a Thanksgiving dinner for lunch. I really want an American to cook one for me one day.

Re: Show Us Your Food
I actually secretly like the green bean casserole honestly, people fight over it. I am not a fan of the candied or marshmallow topped potato stuff hence why I made different sweet potato things.
And yes, it’s basically salad with mayo, peas, cheese and bacon on top.
It’s definitely a bring a dish affair so you can end up with random stuff. We did walk about what we were making but I’ve seen bigger gathering with all Mr J’s aunts result in there being 5 pecan pies and 4 variations of weird sweet potatoes and some really random salad offerings.

Re: Show Us Your Food
We don’t really do it properly as ours is always more or less Christmas dinner but no Christmas pudding. I have been to various school/co-op potluck Thanksgivings and it is astonishing. The casseroles in particular are very special A lot of it is nostalgia though, people use their grandma’s recipe (even down to the brand of mushroom soup and packet of dried fried onions I also enjoy photos where there is a dish with an entire can of cranberry sauce dumped out and it still has the shape of the can
S’s colleague’s thanksgiving tradition is that there is a pie per person. He showed me the photo of their dessert table

Re: Show Us Your Food
We had the can shaped cranberry sauce (it’s out of shot in my pictures) mil likes homemade (as do i) but most of the family only eat the canned kind so she doesn’t always bother to make hers.

I don’t think I’ve seen this though maybe something similar. More like savoury layered salads or weird mayo based things.
