Salad cream is nice and tangy. It's good but I wouldn't get through a bottle in five years so it's not that good.

Both have their places! Salad cream has the vinegary bite that you need for things like cucumber sandwiches, but you need the richness of mayo when accompanying anything potato-ey.

I had ham, tomato & salad cream in my sandwich today
I like SC on chips so I imagine it would go ok with a roast potato. Not so sure about the rest of the roast with it though

I may be regretting my decision to share with the group. I knew it was a little rogue, but didn’t think it would cause THIS much consternation. Perhaps* I should Think On about the error of my ways.Toast wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 5:11 pm I'm sorry, Ashley. I feel like my questioning was a little aggressive. I think I was in shock. I should say I've never had salad cream either so I'm not really in a position to judge. It does not sound right though. Sorry. I've apologised and then made it worse. I can't help it though.
*I shan’t.

Ashley! Don’t let them bully you! Stay strong in your commitment to repulsive food choices!
I don’t think I’ve had salad cream since I left home, it was pretty much my mum’s only concession to processed food. I like it (on salad).

We only had salad cream in my house growing up so I didn't get to try mayonnaise till I was in my early teens. I am definitely team mayo and not team salad cream.

Salad cream and mayo work well together on chips.
When I have fish and chips I have a bit of the curry sauce A gets, mushy peas, salt, vinegar, ketchup and salad cream. E gets gravy to go with her f&c but I draw the line at that.
Salad cream is just seasoning

I was the same as Is, salad cream growing up. We only got mayonaise after my dad did a work period abroad somewhere (Holland maybe?) where it was traditional to put Mayo on fries and he declared it delicious. I like Mayo but much prefer salad cream, that said a little SC mixed with a little mayo in egg mayonnaise or potato salad gives the perfect consistency of creamy with tangy.
Couldn’t have it with gravy, but then I hate the idea of chips, cheese and gravy which is apparently a very popular thing now?!
That said I used to put ketchup on Sunday roasts as a kid so can’t comment, mind you this was more because I hated roast dinners and at least ketchup gave it some interest.

What’s the purpose of salad cream? Is it like a thick dressing?

I remember the first time I had mayonnaise as we didn't have it at home growing until I introduced everyone to it. I was about 14 though so not an adult like Ism.
Cheese, chips and gravy is absolutely a thing. A delightful thing.

All I know is that it is made like mayonnaise except with cooked egg yolks.

I had salad cream with everything growing up. It goes especially well with fishfingers, mash and sweetcorn, in corned beef sandwiches and I think I only discovered egg and tuna mayo as a student with an especially sophisticated house mate (both were always mixed with salad cream in our house). Maybe not with a roast though.

Salad cream definitely has its place. I prefer it to mayo in an egg 'mayo' sandwich, and go through phases with which I have on salad. It is really nice with new potatoes so I can imagine it on a roastie, but can't get on board with having it with a full roast, much as I want to back you up Ashley. Sorry

Oh, definitely don't Think On, Ashley. Everyone should eat whatever they like. If you come over for Sunday lunch then you'll have to bring your own salad cream though. And sit in the garden, by yourself.

My mum loves salad cream and always asks if I have any! She will have to buy her own. And take it home with her

It does have a lot of sugar compared to mayo, however, so avoid if you’re low-carb or low-sugar.

I love salad cream. I don't buy it often but have some in the fridge at the moment. For me it's for salad, egg salad, potato salad and salad cream sandwiches. It's synthetic 79s goodness.

Me too. I always thought salad cream was common (hence we had it) and and mayo was posh (hence I first had it on holiday). We always had a dollop next to our iceberg, spring onion and tomato salad (the only three acceptable ingredients in my childhood home), but it was also wheeled out for picnics and so I now associate it with pork pie, scotch egg or quiche. I also put it on day-old pizza, cheese on toast or occasionally a hard-boiled egg / egg sarnie.
