Novelty cakes
If you were making a climbing wall cake would you try to make it vertical or is that ridiculously ambitious?

Re: Novelty cakes
How thin would you want to make it? You can make it as tall as you like, but I'd probably have it at least 4-6" thick, and dowel it, which might make it look quite... bulky?

How about something like this?

I'd probably attempt it vertically, but I'm a bit daft like that when I get an idea in my head. I don't see any issue with it as long as you get a deep enough base to keep it upright. Climbers might need to be attached with cocktail sticks though (if you're doing them).

Re: Novelty cakes
I don't want to have to make a massive cake as it's only going to be for family. I think it would end up being too thin to be stable if it was vertical. The other advantage of horizontal is that the climbing figure won't fall off.

Me too, that's the problem. I told MrTex I was going to make it and he assumed it would be horizontal because that's just sensibleGlint wrote:I'd probably attempt it vertically, but I'm a bit daft like that when I get an idea in my head. Re: Novelty cakes
That sort of thing Hibou, I'm going to make a square cake and either make the top face the wall or sandwich it and use the side as a vertical wall. It will be roughly based on the pic of L I posted a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, I agree about the person being too big but it's a good shape

I like the vertical cake! Do it! If it's only family, then it won't be a major disaster if you have a crash. Rubble still tastes good. ;)

And the answer is yes, it is a bit ambitious. The overhangs are too heavy and might need patching together tomorrow. I'm pleased with the little climber though and glad I gave it a go.
Re: Novelty cakes
Your climber needs a rope!
That looks really good, I love the different coloured routes.
