Since then the Nuffield theatres in Southampton have gone into administration.

I am so sad about this, it was 5 minutes walk from the BaaParents' previous house (where I grew up). We'd go for plays and concerts, and me and SisBaa played in various orchestras and bands there.

I'm sad too, I used to go and see comedy stuff there quite regularly.

It's really sad. By all accounts they were successful, thriving venues - this isn't like retail where a lot of places were already struggling.

Newcastle theatres at risk:

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/whats-o ... ILxtDYsnFc

I meant to say that the other other major issue with online productions is the majority of larger British regional theatres these days are receiving houses. Putting a touring production online would cut out the revenue and work for all the venues it would have visited - places like Newcastle, Coventry, Malvern, Bath Theatre Royal, Manchester Palace, Edinburgh Kings, my local theatre, Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud etc.

That's a really good point. I think the Mayflower in Southampton only does touring stuff apart from panto.

Curve have sent me a new date for Six so I’ve just transferred our tickets. It’s not until Sept 2021, but Henry VIII can wait.

This is a fantastic piece by Sam Mendes about how British theatre and live music industry can and should be saved. I particularly agree with the points about the irony of Netflix and Amazon raking it in.

I often think people have NO idea how much it generates for our economy, or how interconnected theatre/TV/Film are in the UK and the fact you can't just lose one without wrecking the others.

The Red Shoes is being streamed to cinemas, for anyone who didn’t get to see it. I think there’s still dates this weekend and next week.

They filmed Uncle Vanya during lockdown, with Roger Allam stepping in for Ciarán Hinds.

I can get to neither. :ruby:

I did get to see Uncle Vanya, as our trip away was postponed, and I'm very glad I did. Some elements struck a chord in light of the impending lockdown, and the acting was brilliant. Bloody depressing, of course.

I've just rebooked the beatbox family comedy thing that was cancelled earlier in the year (they refunded rather than rescheduled). It's next October so I'm optimistic. I'm risking it a bit more with a play for the girls in the week before Christmas.

The Boomtown Rats gig that I was meant to be going to with J (postponed from whenever) should have been on 3rd. I'm not sure if it's postponed again, or if it's cancelled now.

We've got tickets for Billy Bragg next November, so fingers crossed. When the Rats postponed, this November seemed a dead cert, though, so who knows.

There's a National Theatre at Home streaming service!

https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/ntathome

I shall be buying a yearly subscription for my parents for Christmas.

Aww amazing! So many people wanted to be able to rent plays when they stopped streaming at the end of the first lockdown, especially people abroad or who couldn't get to a cinema that was streaming (my town hall hasn't re-started, for instance), or even people who'd seen a show live/streamed and wanted to watch it again.

Obviously, all theatres being able to reopen for live performances is the goal, but so many people can't get to the NT so this is a great addition long-term.

Absolutely, wendy!

I'm chuffed, there's loads of stuff I want to watch and it all seems very reasonable. I was desperate to see Yerma, so it's a Christmas miracle!
