Film 2022

We watched Death on the Nile on Disney+ last night, and thought it was boring. Too dark, too CGI’d, and almost everyone seemed completely miscast (pretty much everyone was putting on a foreign accent and it showed). Absolutely not a patch on the Ustinov or Suchet versions.

(I was also irrationally annoyed by the oh-so-pretty Karnak paddle steamer they were travelling on with floor to ceiling double storey glass everywhere. There’s a reason why that’s not how people built things in hot countries before aircon -it would have been like travelling around in a greenhouse. Still, it meant we got lots of arty shots of people viewed through rippling glass…. )

And an electric guitar and twerking in what appeared from the fashions (and the original setting) to be the late 1930s, yet Poirot was a young man in 1918 and then an old man 20 years later. I'm glad I saw it but I won't watch it again, and I hope KB doesn't make another Agatha Christie film since this one was worse than the last. The first hour when almost nothing happened could have so easily been edited to ten minutes without losing any of the story.

We watched Uncharted today. It was a great mindless action movie. Completely unbelievable but fun.

We had family film night on Friday and watched Belfast. All 4 of us absolutely loved it

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.

I’m really disappointed to hear this as I was looking forward to seeing it. Saves me £50 in tickets though!

I went to see The Lost City this afternoon and enjoyed it more than I did Doctor Strange.

I went to see Downton last night ans thoroughly enjoyed it though of course it’s as gorgeous and ephemeral as candy floss. Absolutely no substance but looks lovely. That said, I shed a few tired and emotional tears at the appropriate moments as I’ve no filter these days.

It is just like listening in on snippets of 500 conversations to move the plot along really.

Yes I think you’ll quickly pick up on anything major that’s happened, there’s even a couple of convenient re-caps in the dialogue for people who might have forgotten/not seen every episode

Marvel have definitely gone off a bit since Disney. Morbius and Dr Strange were both fine and enjoyable but you know, that's a low bar when you also consider I say that Michael Bay films are fine and enjoyable. There's no real edge or shock humour and they don't take the piss out of themselves much anymore. I mean, we are in a post The Boys world, they need to take a long hard look at their own intrinsic silliness and just laugh at it. I have high hopes for Taika Waititi's Thor, though, mainly because my love for Taika knows no bounds, particularly after Our Flag Means Death.

I think I might take Mum to see Uncharted this week. She calls Channing Tatum 'that nice young man' after we went to see the dog film..
