Damon Galgut writes beautifully. :love2: I did like The Promise, it was big ideas done beautifully and quietly.

I've not read anything proper since Back to Black. Hilary has broken me.

Have now started Daisy Jones and the Six and loving it already!
There is a Swedish Film version - about 2015. You might be able to find and stream it somewhere - Amazon Prime?
Thanks for the tip! I have found it!

I wouldn't! Yet another I DNF.
I didn’t - I couldn’t face it. I did however enjoy Remarkable Creatures instead, only a year after Bean recommended it. I have nothing to read* on the way back though as I decided not to get carried away and being two books. :ella:

*Not really true - I have several Kindle first reads built up but I could be making a dent in my tsundoku.

The Mad Women’s Ball was a bit crap, sadly. Might make a decent film though. The characters needed fleshing out and it was all this happened, then this happened, then this happened.

A Man Called Ove made me cry, too! All over the beach. Bless him!

I tried Jarvis Cocker's Good Pop, Bad Pop but it didn't really draw me in. I think a fan would enjoy it more.

I read The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley. I thought it was quite weak, not as good as The Guest List and The Hunting Party.

I read Heartburn today at the spa, I can’t believe I’ve never read it before. It was really good. I have a pretty Virago Modern Classics version that my sister ordered for me.

Hard agree!

Mikael Persbrandt is Ove, in my head at least.

I finished The Promise today, it was really well written but it was quite gloomy too.

I read Wake by Shelley Burr over the last few days. It was recommended in the Guardian's crime books of the year, and it was very good. A bit like Jane Harper books.

New Rebus next .
I just finished this and thought the ending of it was so rushed. What about all the other characters we read about for 300 odd pages?!

It was, wasn't it? She seemed to build up for ages and then crammed in the ending.

I read Henning Mankel's Depths, which was gloomy and cold. Unsurprisingly. Then decided I needed entertaining, so I've started Jospehine Tey's Inspector Grant series at the beginning. She does write well and is very sharp. I am going to politely say 'of its time' to reference the fact that there's a sentence that says something like 'the Dago is ratlike.' :look:
