It took me longer to read Orbital than it should have, given the length of the book. It was really good though, beautifully written and incredibly thoughtful.

After reading all the Thursday Murder Club books back to back, I have now started the first Jackson Brodie book. I really like her writing style! She sucks you right in from the first page.

Yes, her writing is lovely. I'm keen to re-read from the beginning as I've forgotten everything that happened before this one, but everyone else seems to have had the same idea as they're all on loan for ages at the library. ;)
The Works are doing that book date thing. I don't read physical books anymore and also don't really have faith in the opinions of strangers.

I'm reading The Future by Naomi Alderman (who wrote The Power - sensing a theme with her titles...) which I'm really enjoying so far - it's a bit of a dystopic tale of technology in the future. Anyone else read it?

Thanks for the heads up my book twin, I have just borrowed this! Loved The Power.
I just read the two Mickey 7 books, which I quite enjoyed as an easy read bit of sci-fi space/aliens romp. I mainly wanted to read it in anticipation of the film coming out next month I think.

I'm putting The Future on my list.
I'm reading so slowly at the moment because I'm up at the crack of dawn, against my will, and keep falling asleep in my tiny daily reading window of 20 minutes before lights out in bed.
I am enjoying it - All The Light We Cannot See-Anthony Doeer - and its very very short chapters are perfect for my narcolepsy but I'm looking forwar to smashing a massive chunk of it over the next two leisurely mornings in bed.

Re: Read the Room
I'm with Epp on this one. It's no work of great literature but was a fun romp. I must thank my colleague! I'm interested to hear what Book Club 2 thinks of it, as I've found a lot of our books there a bit dull and we'd all agreed to mix it up a bit, hence my sci-fi suggestion.Disco wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 4:41 pmI fully hated thisEpponnee Rae wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 11:02 am I just finished Project Hail Mary (sci-if) which was actually better than I expected.![]()
Now onto The Moonflowers. It's Book Club 1's Feb choice, but we're not meeting until 1 March due to the organiser's availability. That means I have both book clubs within days of each other (BC2 meets on the first Tues of the month). I'm hoping to get this one out of the way in time to read a book of my own choosing!

I liked The Future, didn't love it. Preferred The Power, in any case.
Am on In Memoriam, which my best pal gave me at Christmas. I'm 75 pages in and I just want to read it all day.

Re: Read the Room
I just bought that lazz as BC1 read it last year but I knew I couldn't make the discussion so I didn't bother, but some raved about it. It came up as 99p for Kindle so I added it to the stash. I look forward to hearing what you thought once you finish!

I have this on my list, along with The Power. I love her game writing too. Zombies Run is the only thing that got me running a few years ago.

I'm on Cher's memoir (part 1). All about her mum thusfar but it's a fascinating read.

I'm intrigued by her games, Starry! She was mentored by Margaret Atwood which makes a lot of sense. Anyway, The Power is a corker.
In Memoriam is killing me but I can't put it down. The author went to the same uni as I did and she's definitely a type.
But now I want to write my own bloody novel.

I read Sandwich last week, I thought I'd really like it because it was about a menopausal woman but she (the character) really annoyed me. She has a grown up daughter who sounded like an absolute precocious twat but she kept on about how amazing she (daughter).

I will not be thanking my non-existent school archivist when *I* write my novel, I tell ya.

Re: Read the Room
I loved In Memoriam.
I read The Bell Jar which was obviously good but harrowing.
Then a Lisa Jewell thriller (None of This is True). Ok but I have the same old whinge about Lisa Jewell changing her style as I don’t like thrillers in general.
Now reading Butter by a Japanese author, which is really good so far. It’s been translated into English but is still a good read.

Translated fiction is even more of an artform than writing fiction in the first place, Lola. ;) I'm very intrigued about Butter but not sure if it'd give me weird dreams (I'm very suggestible).
I should probably re-read The Bell Jar, I read it when I was at school and I hated it and I'm sure it went right over my head.

Butter was worth reading. The translator (Polly Barton) is really well respected and has won awards. My sister adores her.
