Re: Reading Heart Liberals
I've read a few by her. I like her and would like to read that one. Thanks for mentioning it.

N picked it up for a fiver in The Works, but I can send it to you if you want? Let me know and I'll bung it in the post.
N also said there's a book about the original Jack the Ripper victims from a feminist/victim-centred perspective but googling isn't helping me find it amongst the thousands of hagiographic ripper books.

Re: Reading Heart Liberals
On holiday I read The Reading List, which I realised is one my MIL maybe recommended (she’s a librarian).
I also read The Murder Book, which doesn’t make me want to read more Thorne books. I recall liking the early ones but picking this up years later (having not read the in between ones) didn’t really work. It’s not a great standalone book.

I didn't really like The Murder Book, the other Thorne books were much better.

I just finished Between Us by Mhairi McFarlane and loved it. Perfect holiday reading. It was a bit like a British version of Friends but with a more serious side. I'm now starting Lessons in Chemistry.

I read Martin O'Neills autobiography this week. It was a bit boring as football books can be. I do love him as he was the most successful manager of Celtic in my lifetime and he also looks like my dad (which Papa Mac loved!)
Anyway, now I'm reading the new Lisa Jewell.

Re: Reading Heart Liberals
I read a Rizzoli and isles book, which was ok - definitely better written than some I’ve started recently! Then a Sophie Hannah, which zipped along but was a terrible actual plot. I don’t think I’ll bother with more.

Every time I see Sophie Hannah has another book out I keep thinking, it'll be better than the last one, and the one before that, and the one before.... and it never is. Ever.

Re: Reading Heart Liberals
She is the most frustrating author as the premise always sounds fascinating and the actual book is always a massive disappointment. I gave up with her books a while ago as a result.
I’m reading the latest DI Cross book (the Monk), it’s very good and I like the character very much.

Demon Copperhead was excellent, but I think I am preaching to the converted here saying that. :)) Kept me going at rollicking pace throughout, firmly on Demon's side and rooting for a win. :)) I'm now on GB Shaw's The Conspirators (William Shaw writing under a different name), which is a bit... unrealistic for him so far. I am quite hooked though, so will persevere.
I have the next Garry Disher and Helen MacDonald's Prophet on my August to-read list. I am intrigued by Prophet - sci-fi written with Sin Blache - but H is for Hawk and Vesper Flights are beautiful and I rate her alongside Hilary Mantel as some of the most glorious prose I've read, ever.
Stephen King's Holly is out in September, so that's holiday reading sorted. Can you tell I've just made diary notes for publishing dates? :))

All received, thank you very much!
I am trying to catch up with my library books. I'm on The Startup Wife by Tahmima Anam - I'm not sure about it yet, but it's intriguing.

I'd not heard of this - I thought H is for Hawk was one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read as well. I need to read.Bat Macdui wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 8:56 am Helen MacDonald's Prophet on my August to-read list. I've finished Everything's Fine and really enjoyed it - then had a look at some Goodreads reviews and discovered it had created a proper TikTok storm and opinion is very firmly divided! Probably a 4/5 for me and I couldn't put it down at the end.
I'm now reading Luke Jennings - Blood Knots which is a memoir and has too much angling for me, but is nicely written and short so I shall finish.

I really liked that! Totally believable.
I've decided to re-read Harry Potter after about fifteen years. Finished book 1 yesterday and am now on 2. It's lovely going back to it.

Re: Reading Heart Liberals
It might have been you who recommended it on this thread! I was trying to remember why I had reserved it. It's normally this thread or book reviews in The Week which get added to my library list.
