Re: Read the Room
It was genuinely unsettling in parts, I found.
I've just finished The Peepshow - Kate Summerscale - it's a grim read about 10 Rillington Place and the social history of the time.

Is the most recent Strike one the one about the cult?

BUYING IT AS A GIFT? Also, I do like James Norton, but not that much. :))Pippedydeadeye wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2025 9:54 am A Little Life gets chosen really often on the Bookshelfie podcast. Naga Munchetty (who I adore) said she buys it as a gift for friends! I read the synopsis, and the play reviews (I think James Norton was in it) and it just sounded horrendous.

Ooh this sounds good. I freaked my mum out by informing her that Christie and one of his victims worked at the same place as her.

A Little Life? Yes, its so unnecessarily graphic and relentless.
I adored the last Strike book, one of the best I think.

I agree about The Running Grave. I have lots of conversations about books with patients, and always tell people TRG makes up for the disappointment of The Ink Black Heart (although I am still excited to see the dramatisation of the latter. Hopefully it might make more sense on screen!)

Re: Read the Room
It definitely made more sense on screen, partly because there was very little chat room stuff. I loved the Running Grave.
I have started rereading Fourth Wing in preparation for the third in the series to be released later in Jan
I’ve also just started Into the Storm by Cecilia Ahern which is good so far.

Robert Galbraith needs a stronger editor.
The BBC adaptation of Ink Black Heart was good - its still too clever for its own good but they do a decent job of it.

I felt it needed to be longer, I don't know why they don't do 6 episodes. By contrast, the books should be shorter - as you say, they need a decent editor.
Troubled Blood is my favourite Strike book, I love a cold case. See also, Unforgotten and the Karen Pirie books.

Yes, the books could all be half the length. I still do enjoy them though.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed The Ink Black Heart. For some reason I really liked the format.

I had to stop reading the last Strike due to it being invaded by the ghost of Dick Van Dyke

The dialogue stuff in the Strike books is awful, really terrible.

I have fixed myself with a slightly implausible but very readable Taylor Jenkins Reid (One True Loves).

I quite enjoyed that one Cerise. My friend gave it to me last year/the one before.

Re: Read the Room
I just finished Project Hail Mary (sci-if) which was actually better than I expected. I liked the attempt to literally cram in as much ‘science stuff’ as possible while telling a story and the mean towards cell biology despite being a space story, which is my jam.
Anyway, back to ancient history next with either Piranesi or Sistersong. Thanks for the reminder about the next Fourth Wing book, chicky! I need to know how that ends.

Piranesi was a very confusing book but it was good.
I finished The Running Grave. God, the dialect stuff was dreadful. But it was gripping otherwise, with its cast of thousands.

Re: Read the Room
I was reading Only Here, Only Now this week, but gave up on it as it just wasn't grabbing me. It was a sort of Shuggie Bain story, but about a young girl. It was just a bit bleak and I feel like I've read various books like that so I binned it.
I bought Close to Home the other day so I started that last night and I am enjoying it.
