Re: Reading Heart Liberals
My recent reads are:
Light Perpetual (Francis Spufford) - I can't even recall anything reading the synopsis but I must've liked it as I gave it full stars.
The Reading List (Sara Nisha Adams) - very much enjoyed this. It's been on my list for a long time but Wendle recently read it so it prompted me to pick it up. I grew up around the areas mentioned in the book so I liked that aspect too.
Wild: A Journey From Lost To Found (Cheryl Strayed) - enjoyed. Woman alone hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.
The Man Who Tasted Words (Dr Guy Leschziner) - enjoyed. Each chapter looks at case studies of the senses and how lives are affected in the senses' absence or malformation (for want of a better word).
The Keeper of Stories (Sally Page) - loved this.
Leadville: A Biography of the A40 (Edward Platt) - loved this though this will be very subjective. My first house was on the stretch of road in question so this was very nostalgic.
The Space Between Us (Doug Johnstone) - load of cobblers.
I'm currently reading Morning In THis Broken World (Katrina Kittle) and Look Both Ways (Linwood Barclay) - I have a feeling that these are both going to be lower rated by me but it's still early days for both so that remains to be seen.

I'm glad you said this as I was considering buying it but you've reminded me that I didn't really like the first one.wendy james wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 8:10 am
The second Clare Mackintosh book about a detective in Wales was not great. I think a couple of Turtles disliked her first one, which was passable IMO but the follow up has put me off any more.
I'm reading Spook Street which is the 4th Slough House book. It's enjoyable if a bit far fetched.

Just finished The Running Grave. Too bloody long and I do hate her cliffhanger endings. Her books are so readable but frustrating.

I have just read Romantic Comedy. Much more of an easy read than some of her others but I enjoyed it a lot (I’m an SNL fan so I found the behind the scenes of the show start part of the book fascinating)

This is so true! Why doesn't someone edit her books properly? Every single review says that they're too long, read the room!
Est, I loved Romantic Comedy, I thought it was so well done although I occasionally got frustrated with the main character (Sally?)

I also loved Romantic Comedy – I'd not long read Rodham so it was very different to what I was expecting, but I do like her writing.
I'm currently reading one of the Ann Cleeves' Shetland novels (annoyingly I've read them out of order), then I have The Stirrings (a memoir about growing up in 1970s Sheffield) to pick up from the library

I don't know why she insists on SOOOOO much detail. I really don't care exactly how many fries Strike manages to eat at 3 a.m., I've gotta be honest.
I'm now reading Beryl, In Search of Britain's Greatest Athlete and it's absolutely great.

The boys on TMO went mad for Vernon God Little back in the day, which put me off the whole thing. :))
I have just powered through Snow and April in Spain by John Banville, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have the next one on order from the library now. I am determined to stop willy-nilly books spending though, so my next book will be randomly selected from one of the ebook libraries I have. I am enjoying the element of jeopardy this presents. Though Brian Cox's book about black holes in now 99p on Twitter, but I'm not sure if it will be written for a non-physicist type person.
I can just about manage cosmic web, but I get a bit lost after that.

I must say the Strike books are the only ones where I WANT them to be long. I don't know what it is about them but I absolutely devour them and don't want them to end.

My recent reads -
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley, Loved this, the language is very of its time but a fascinating read.
The Nice Guy - Sarah A Denzil. Formulaic thriller about coercive control, red flags agogo but of course the main character willfully ignores them
This Charming Man - CK McDonnell. 2nd in the Stranger Times series. I love these they're funny easy reads about a paranormal newspaper.
The Man Who Was Thursday - GK Chesterton. I'm sure this is cited as the first spy thriller, a policeman infiltrates a group of anarchists. Mindbending and I'm not completely sure I understood it.
Atomic Habits - James Clear. I'm trying this out at the minute, easy to understand a way to get 1% better every day. I'm currently applying this to running.
The Running Grave - JK Rowling. Agree with everyone else it was a bit too long and some content could be cut but I can't stop reading them.
Currently reading
Love Will Tear Us Apart CK McDonnell
If It Bleeds - Stephen King
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Vampire Slaying - Grady Hendrix

Re: Reading Heart Liberals
They're incredibly readable books, don't get me wrong - whenever I had 15 minutes spare, I was whizzing through another chapter. But I just feel that seven books in, we haven't really moved forward a lot with the personal stuff, just the professional investigations. Which I do like, but that's not the REAL reason I'm reading them.
I want to read Atomic Habits, Duo - I saw it at the station the other day and thought it looked readable/doable.

I think I read the first book I believe he's updated it since. How he started Atomic Habits totally blew me away.

I’ve got Atomic Habits to read again too. I might have read some of it already but I can’t really remember :))
I recently read The Frenchman’s Creek by Daphne Du Maurier, which was really good, unsurprisingly :)
I’m now reading Comfort Eating by Grace Dent

I'm like Lily with the Strike books, theoretically they need a damn good edit but I don't care, I just want to read more.
I'm 80% through The Running Grave and don't think I will be going to bed till I've finished it. Luckily I am ill so can't sleep anyway.

I need to try the Strike books again. I only read the first one.
