Re: Read the Room
I’ll bear that in mind, Pop! Both those are physical library books and I need an ebook for tube/bus journeys, so I have just downloaded three while I’m waiting for various holds to be ready:
You Are Here - David Nicholls
The Last List of Mabel Beaumont - thanks to the recs on here!
The Bookshop Ladies - on kindle unlimited as it seems an easy read

I think I read there were meant to be 5 in the series so I’m not sure it will be the end! I’m happy about that anyway as I love them. Am re-reading Iron Flame now.Epponnee Rae wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 11:02 am

Re: Read the Room
I was just listening to a podcast which mentioned the new Fourth Wing release - I've not read them so have ordered it from the library!
I've just finished a year of reading books on revolutionary thought in 20th Century literature for a podcast course, so I'm up for something a bit lighter!

Ha! Maybe I will enjoy both? In that case we should just recommend books we hate to each other and vice versa :))Disco wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 4:41 pmI fully hated thisEpponnee Rae wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 11:02 am I just finished Project Hail Mary (sci-if) which was actually better than I expected.and the Mabel Beaumont free prime book I read the other day.

Re: Read the Room
I've just finished the Bee Sting and it was hard work. I quite liked some chapters, despised the mother's sections and flicked through loads of them, found it way too long and was relieved when it was over and absolutely hated the ending.
Found an interview with the author to try to work out what had happened and he was all, 'Oh, it's so clear what happened, it's so obvious, but no I won't tell you what it was, as it's up to people to make their own interpretation.' So pretentious and annoying.
I hated the Little Life and gave up on it. Life's depressing enough.
I'll be avoiding All Fours like the plague.
So far this year I've also read:
Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty (enjoyed more than I have her last couple).
31 Dream Street by Lisa Jewel (made me sorry that she only writes psychological thrillers now).
Watch Her Fall by Erin Kelly (not bad).
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch (quite interesting).

I agree with you about Lisa Jewell Ashley. I really really miss her "boring" books. I'm a big Erin Kelly fan though.

The latest Doug Johnstone was a quick read. I like the formulaic nature of the books and the main characters are like old friends now.
I’ve just started Feeding The Monster by Anna Bogutskaya. It’s making me think about the first horror film I ever saw, which is a good idea for a thread.

I loved this. I listened to it on Audible and it has become a comfort book that I dip in and out of, or listen to after a night shift when I know I'll be asleep in 10 minutes.

The Hotel Avocado - Bob Mortimer. Don't get me wrong, I love Bob and have done since the early 90s, but he cannot narrate an audiobook. I read the physical book of The Satsuma Complex and loved the irreverence, but this sort of grated on me after a while.

Duo, I just picked up the new Grady Hendrix.
The woman at the cash desk said she’s too afraid to read his books!

I’ve just read Good Material by Dolly Alderton. Thought it was really good. I’ve got nothing else yet, waiting for holds from the library.

I read that last year, Est, and I enjoyed it too, but I don’t think she does a very good job of writing the male voice as Andy’s character didn’t ring true at all to me.

I finished Close to Home today, and really liked it. It was a bit dark in places but it was so well written.
I have Politics on the Edge by Rory Stewart to read next.

I have mixed thoughts about Rory Stewart, Sal - let us know what you think?
I started O Caledonia by Elspeth Barker yesterday on the recommendation of a friend and am racing through it. Has anyone here read it? The front cover describes it as the best least-known novel of the twentieth century. :))

I liked Politics on the Edge, but it did feel like I'd heard a lot of it before as I listen to The Rest Is Politics regularly. I like Rory though, I think he's a good egg.
I've nearly finished Fourth Wing after picking it up from the library on Thursday - safe to say I'm enjoying it. It's very readable in a Dan Brown way (although I do think it is better written than Dan Brown) and I think she's done a cracking job with the world building and fantasy side.
