I’m only up to the bus journey (trying to avoid giving spoilers), but oh my god, this is such a stressful book.

Mine too, I think. It definitely is stressful though!

It is! I had thought it was an entirely realistic novel so my eyes fell out of my head as the story went on.

Hmmm, I'm going to have to make that one of my next books now... I just finished reading the Pearl of Penang, which I really enjoyed. Now I'm reading the sequel, Prisoner from Penang. No amazing prose or anything but the geographical setting and the historical events are very well-researched, so it reads almost like non-fiction.

I am tempted but wondered if it would be as relevant/interesting for non-parents. It’s only 99p on kindle so worth trying either way I guess :))

I don’t have any children, nor does lazzi, who recommended it.

I think it's interesting if you're human. #sweepinggeneralisation

I've just bought it as well as it's only 99p.

I've just finished 50 out of my target of 52 for the year (The Last Enemy by Richard Hillary with is a memoir of a Spitfire pilot who has reconstructive plastic surgery in the pioneering clinic of Archibald McIndoe.

I don't think I'm going to manage another 2 books today but considering I went through a spell of barely reading when we were moving, I'm fairly pleased with my total anyway.

I've got no idea how many books I've read (I keep a book diary but I don't have it with me) but I think I'm anti-targets when it comes to reading. I don't want to put any pressure on a pleasurable activity.

My target helps me to stop watching TV that doesn’t interest me and to stop doomscrolling. I might also delete Twitter off my phone for the New Year.

I should definitely do that!

I might do that too but I have FOMO.

I've bought The School for Good Mothers on kindle too. I've just started Shrines of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson so will read it after that.

I could never delete Twitter :l:

I finished Alex Scott's autobiography, it was interesting but there was quite a lot of therapy speak and it started to grate by the end.

That brought me to 45 books for the year, 20 more than last year. I don't set a target other than to read more than the previous year. Like Pip, aiming to read more stops me watching shit telly and faffing on my phone.

I bought Great Circle and Still Life (actual books) and The School for Good Mothers for my tablet so one of those will be next.

I liked Still Life (one of my 30 last year).

I've started Klara and the Sun this morning which I've wanted to read for ages and I was drawn in instantly.
