Turtles, reading books

Post by Turtle Bean »

I know it's early but I always want to pick the title. I also found this cute picture.

Tell me your reading plans and goals. I have made a to read list of books I already own but have not read which is below. I'm going to try and not buy anything else till these are read. Some are paper, some Kindle. I will have my monthly book club read also so am aiming for 52 again.

I am currently reading Days at the Morisaki Bookshop but may well finish that before tomorrow night. January book club is And the Mountains Echoed which I have not read before.

Here is my to read list:

Castle d'Or - Daphne du Maurier
A Farewell to Arms - Ernest Hemmingway
Demon Copperhead - Barbara Kingsolver (I started this but had to stop as the text is very small and I have temporarily misplaced my good reading glasses).
A Moment of War - Laurie Lee
Capital - John Lanchester
Insomnia - Stephen King
The Angel's Game - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Alone in Berlin - Hans Fallado
Rob Rot - Walter Scott

I have others I could add but I have had them on my to read list for the past three years and not read them so it is clearly not their time.

I love how insistent you are on titling the thread.

I’m aiming for 52 books. And to read more nonfiction, but also the Women’s Prize shortlist again, because I really enjoyed that in 2023. Still aiming to read more women than men too.

If other people choose the name, they often do it wrong.

:) I just posted on the old (!) thread! Your to read list is very impressive, Bean, as is your goal.

I’d LOVE to set a more ambitious goal for myself next year but that’s easy to say while I’m at my leisure. So I think sticking with 24 books is fair for me. I have 3-4 physical books waiting to be read here (though probably another 7-8 in my shipment!), including Demon Copperhead and a Daphne du Maurier. I easily read more women than men last year and I’m happy to continue doing that.

You had an entire year to think up a name for this thread.

Let that sink in.

You control freak. :))

I've just started a new one, which is a short story collection by Daphne Du Maurier featuring Don't Look Now.

Books that should have been read in 2023, and are on my To-Read List:

Hidden Pictures - Jason Redulak
Midnight Is The Darkest Hour - Ashley Winstead
The Housemaid - Freida McFadden

Once I've knocked those off I get to add new ones. I don't have a reading goal though. I think I may rebel against it.

I am mid book, which will be finished in 2023 and you’ve locked the thread. :panic:

I set my target at 26 last year and increased it to 52, then 78 then 100 and it will be 105-106. I’m thinking of 52 for 2024.

I’ve been reading all the “Best Books to Watch Out For in 2024” lists and passing them to my sister. I’m excited about the new Katherine Arden, I loved her Winternight trilogy.

Ooh I didn't know there was going to be another! But Shrines of Gaiety was shit so I hope she's back on her game.

Alone in Berlin is very good, Beanoid, I remember that much.

I shall continue writing short reviews of the books I read in my book journal, it's pleasing to see more and more pages filles. :spin: I am reading the latest Richard Osman because I've been unwell over Xmas and need something light.

I’ll aim for 30 again. The first will be Tomorrow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow for my book group and I’ll start that on Monday.

Because I didn’t want to start a book that I couldn’t finish in 2023, I’m reading one of the non-fiction books I have on the go for such times - Born Lippy by Jo Brand.

I'm very excited about our new year of reading. I've finished Days at the Morisaki Bookshop and found my reading glasses but have decided not to restart Demon Copperhead till Monday.

I enjoyed shrines of gaiety but thought the ending was cobbled together.

I want to finish the Wolf Den trilogy but other than that I have no firm plans.

The target is to read 104 books again.

I've got the third instalment of Wolf Den on my bedside table, Duo. I'm a bit scared to start it, tbh. I don't want it to end badly!

Yes, I think I'll take my time with the last one. Such a treat. :tree:
