Definitely try Root! If you can't get in there, there are so many little eateries right next to it (and under it, in fact).

Thank you. It's been a few years since we ate out in Bristol, it's good to have recs for the new stuff. I think one of the last meals we ate there was an under cooked risotto in Shed Seven, we kind of gave up after that.

Oh, deffo Root now I've had a quick look. The chef used to work at The Pony & Trap in Chew Magna, I had an excellent tasting menu there in the summer so I already know the food will be good.

Hmmm, maybe I should revisit the Pony and Trap then. I went a couple of years ago and wasn't impressed.

What were you not impressed by, out of interest? I liked P&T but didn't love it as much as some similarly well regarded places I've been.

Re: Where have you eaten out lately?
I just didn't think it was particularly special or interesting, so the food was decent, but not memorable, and I thought very over priced for what it was (I've eaten more cheaply and better at loads of places in a similar style).
Also, they gave out some kind of whole, plain vegetable as the pre-starter snack.
It just felt a bit try hard, kind of 'look at our fresh ingredients from our garden' rather than serving something that was actually nice that you couldn't do yourself.

I mean, give me nice bread and butter and I'm happy. A radish (I think that's what it was), not so much.

To be clear: my memory is slightly hazy so I'm not completely certain it was radishes, rather than I don't know a bunch of radishes when I see them.

Yeah I wouldn't have been pleased with a whole plain radish! I remember liking the food but don't recall anything I ate at all (I tend to remember at least one course). I also thought the interior was very plain (not in a good way). I didn't dis-like it though.

Yes, and I didn't think the service was brilliant. I think also, although the location is pretty, it's a bit of an arse to get there. I'd be more likely to revisit if it was in the centre and it was a bit better value. I mean, I didn't dislike the food either, but I felt like there's other restaurants I'd rather try than going back there, but maybe I missed something.

It IS an arse to get to (from my side of Bristol anyway).

It's an arse to get to. My feelings on the P&T are about the same -very nice but not special and a bit expensive.
Adelina Yard, Bulrush, Birch, Shop 3 Bistro, Riverstation and Casamia are all pretty special.

The last time I went to Riverstation I wasn't impressed but it was about 12yrs ago and with a boyfriend I was about to dump so I should try it again.

I did see, I still have to go. Many of my friends refuse to go to tapas places because they don't like sharing food. they are all like Smithy and it's irritating.
I would add Bel's diner to the list as well. Seriously superb. And apparently Pasta Loco is good, have you been there yet?

I also meant to mention Mowgli. It was properly excellent food, and such good value. We couldn’t choose from the menu and were starving, so just asked the waitress to bring us what she thought we’d like. She was brilliant too. The yoghurt chat bombs were amazing. I’ve preordered the recipe book off the back of it and I’m plotting my next trip to Birmingham.
