Re: Where have you eaten out lately?
We went to the Railhouse Cafe on Saturday, and it was just awful. No, that's not fair; the cocktails were excellent, which rather got our hopes up. The food was actively disgusting and we ended up leaving after their second attempt at serving us an edible starter. (We tried to pay for our drinks but it all got really British and they wouldn't let us pay for anything, so I ended up leaving cash to the same amount.)
In better news though, we went to Lupins yesterday for S's birthday lunch. I was a bit nervous on arrival as we were the first people there and the area is... Southwark (which is fine, I live in Southwark, but it's not fancy on the surface of it). Anyway, the only member of staff we met (think she was the manager) was absolutely lovely, the food was amazing, and we just had a lovely, relaxed time. Highly recommended.

Re: Where have you eaten out lately?
I went to Tare in Bristol last Friday to celebrate the recent wedding of a couple of friends that I'd not been able to attend. It's a prix fixe set menu of 4 courses with 2 starters, a main and dessert or cheeseboard, for £44. Each course was beautiful, the pork that I had for the main course was exceptional and they didn't stint on the cheese.

They do two sittings a night and we were at the early one (6pm - 8.30pm). We didn't feel at all rushed. I liked the setting too, it's in a couple of converted shipping containers alongside a number of other eateries of various cuisine and price ranging from takeaway fish and chips to rather nice tapas. The wine we chose* was good also and not horrendously priced. Their glassware was cool and their cocktails interesting, each served with a single oversized ice cube of the appropriate shape (a long baton for a tall drink and a cube for a tumbler) so that the drink was cooled without being unduly diluted by melted ice.
*chosen because of the name which was "Goats Do Roam" - we were unsure between choosing two different wines and they are happy to bring you a small tasting sample of each.

Oh what a shame Ella - we were so impressed with the food. I wonder what the hell's happened to the kitchen in the space of a couple of weeks.

I love that wine, it's so nice. it's named because that vineyard has a tower which the Goats climb.H1ppychick wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2019 3:14 pm *chosen because of the name which was "Goats Do Roam" - we were unsure between choosing two different wines and they are happy to bring you a small tasting sample of each.

But I'm glad you give Tare a good review, I'm keen to try it.

Is that Koocha? I haven't been but my hairdresser says it's where she takes all her non-vegan friends and they've all said the same as you.Froozy wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2019 9:32 pm That sounds delicious, SunnyMum. What did you have?
We went to a local vegan place last night for supper and it was delicious. They do tapas dishes and mains. I had vegetable fritters, roast cauliflower and beetroot dip with za’tar flatbreads and D had Mediterranean vegetables with their version of a doner kebab (using seitan), and we shared chips with some kind of seasoning. I am usually quite reluctant to go to pure vegan places as I do like meat but it was really good.

Re: Where have you eaten out lately?
It was so strange! We ordered burrata to share as the starter, and when it arrived it was like if you'd gone to a remote town in Russia and told somebody to make a fake burrata analog from materials they had lying around. It was utterly disgusting. Also it came on a bed of roasted red peppers, which were not advertised (it was supposed to be blood orange; really quite different). We politely sent that back and they admitted that it might be "a bit dry" (HMM) so we asked for the artichoke dip instead. When it arrived it was this blackened, oily mess with 4 tiny bits of bread. It really didn't look right at all, and it tasted like... roasted red peppers*. They'd brought entirely the wrong dish (and even if we had ordered it deliberately, it would have been inedible). We were genuinely very worried about what the main courses would look like, so we asked to cancel them and settle up for what we'd had. I never usually say anything in restaurants, but this was something else.Derek Nimmo wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2019 3:43 pm Oh what a shame Ella - we were so impressed with the food. We had the burrata (with blood orange as advertised) and it was lovely! How disappointing.

I wasn't a fan of Railhouse Cafe either (I went about a month after it opened, I think, so a while ago). Nothing as bad as Ella's experience, but the food was really average and the service was terrible.

How bizarre Ella, and such a shame on a night out that you've been looking forward to.
I have actually been out a few times in the last couple of weeks, which is very unusual. They were:
The Blues Kitchen, Shoreditch - which was a really fun place to go, with loads of Southern soul food. The oreo doughnuts for dessert were divine
Providores on Marylebone High Street for another fantastic dinner just before it closed forever
The Ivy at Canary wharf - first time I'd tried one of their brasserie chain restaurants, and it was lovely food, in a lovely "garden room" setting.
The Giggling Squid - a thai chain that has opened a local branch and was really nice, we'll definitely go back.

Re: Where have you eaten out lately?
That burger place looks great pip!
We went out Friday to the new tomahawk steak place. The restaurant was lovely (albeit exactly the same deco wise as the previous occupant) service was lovely and we shared a garlic prawn pil pil for starter which was fantastic, we both said we could have quite happily had one each a glass of wine and called it a day.
Which I kind of wish I had, I tried for the first time a Waygu steak which I’ve never had and I can honestly say it was ....fine. No better or worse than a steak you’d get in a pub. The chips were ok, the cabbage side I chose was awful, I tried it left it and mr tried and it and proclaimed it inedible.
I wouldn’t have been bothered, steak is steak but for a steak restaurant the ones in our local Italian are much nicer and it wasn’t cheap (£35 for my steak and two small sides, I realise London turtles will think this is cheap)Was nice to have a night out though!

Re: Where have you eaten out lately?
We went back to the Black Sheep earlier in the week, and as usual it was lovely. Plus I knew not to eat everything quickly due to portion size.
Then, yesterday we went to a newish Italian in the town for lunch and it was lovely. We had a 2 course lunch special for £10 each which we couldn’t finish and S unexpectedly ate free.
We will return to both places

We went to Seven Lucky Gods which is a new place in the containers in Wapping Wharf (Bristol harbourside). Its Japanese fushion small plates and it was delicious. Highlights included lamb chops that were probably the nicest lamb I've ever had, and chicken katsu arancini balls that I've fully fantasised about since Friday.

That looks good, Pip.
I’d like to thank Cos and Smal for the 7lucky gods rec. I’m waiting to go for the second time as it was so good last time. Especially the arancini!
