Perforated eardrum

Post by Lily »

The pain, blimey. I've been to hospital, have got antibiotics, but what the heck do I do about the pain? I have paracetamol, codeine, ibuprofen, some oramorph, cocodamol... I have put a hot water bottle on it and a warm flannel... Please help me stay in top of the pain. If you've had it done, how long did this take to abate please?

I've never had it, but that sounds awful, you poor thing. I hope you're feeling better soon.

I've had one a couple of times, and each time the pain has gone as soon as its burst - has yours definitely perforated already? Before that point, ibuprofen was usually most helpful as it helped with the inflammation.

Stabby ear pain is very shitty though, you have my sympathies. Hope it resolves itself soon!

(If you have the right antibiotics, they should kick in by tomorrow morning I'd have thought.)

Ouch poor you! Both of mine peforated when I had whooping cough and it was so painful, as Del says, prior to them bursting. Also agree with the ibuprofen and antibiotics usually kick in within 48 hours.

I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks all. It's definitely ruptured; I rang 111 in despair at 0400 and was told to leave it for 3 days unless something changed. Then half my brains fell out so I rang them again and they booked an appointment at the hospital this evening where the doctor confirmed it had ruptured. Bloody impressive I must say.

Diccers,I can't believe you lost them both, the pain must have been horrendous! I've found a heat pad I normally use on my knees and that's helping.

That's so it, like toothache. You can't rub it better.

I love living alone but blimey I could do with someone looking after me right now :whinge:

Oh, Lily, I hope you haven’t had too horrible a night and that the antibiotics have started to kick in. I’ve never had one but I totally agree it’s the worst type of pain. I used to find solpadeine worked well for toothache.

Thank you all - fortunately the pain has much abated but I feel rather rotten and can hear bugger all out of it. I hope my hearing will come back; it's like living in the days of mono. I've taken a couple of days off work but hope to feel ready to go in tomorrow.

I'm glad the pain has gone - IME it did take a few weeks each time for the hearing to come back properly, but it did eventually (and fully) even though the same ear went twice. Take it easy!

it's a weird feeling, isn't it. Were you all snotty at the same time? I simply cannot stop blowing my nose. I've taken an antihistamine in case I'm allergic to something.
