Lily, you will be the best dog owner. The fact that you've thought about it so much and done so much planning is proof of that. Whoever comes to live with you will be very lucky.

Oh, I’ve just realized we’ve not asked the most important question of all. What’s his name?

Thank you all  my confidence is boosted.

His name is Toby currently, but as I know several Tobys I'd be looking to start again. I did some research on this and it's actively encouraged if a dog is from a rescue home as it helps them start afresh. I'm trying not to think of names, so of course I am doing so ALL THE TIME. It has to be a decent doggy name but not a run of the mill one. I was thinking Rufus as he's so red, but everyone has dogs called Rufus. And they might think he was named after Rufus Hound.

My grandparents used to have French teenagers to stay for the summer, and one of them wrote afterwards "It was so lovely to stay with you all and I especially enjoyed walking Basket, your dog." So I'm half-tempted to call him Basket. If he likes me. If I like him. etc., etc.

Rufus . I don’t think I know a doggy Rufus. Or any Rufuseseses for that matter. There are 1001 Teddys :ella:. I like Toby too.

I have a list of unused names somewhere that my children vetoed. Off the top of my head Hugo, Ziggy, Rusty, Barney were some of my choices. Ziggy or Rusty would have suited him better than Teddy!

Basket! What was the dog’s real name? Biscuit? (I’m assuming not Basket.)

Just from your photos Squizz, he totally looks like a Teddy

One of my dog cousins is called Rufus (my aunt’s dog) who was also a rescue, from Romania. He is big and soppy and barks when other dogs come on tv. He also thought Chewbacca the Wookie was a dog and barked at him

There are two Rufus turtle cats.

Human names are great for pets - I love Steve for a dog. Or Jeff.

Alan might work :))

There was a Dennis in Daisy’s puppy class. I love that.

Dennis! That would be excellent. Although may invite “is he a menace?” questions :ella:

Our rescue, Harvey, was about five years old when I brought him home. He took to his new name immediately and would actually refuse to acknowledge his previous name. He just seemed to know he was finally home.

Cool, no Rufus, we can't have too many of them.

The dog was called Pippa! But because they kept shouting "Basket!" at her all the time (to get her to go into her basket) the student thought she was called Basket.

I was thinking of human names, too. Bertie, after my great-great uncle who died at the Somme, or Douglas, after my grandpa (my dad's dad). Dennis is fabulous, but one of my dearest friends is called Dennis so it would get confusing.

Five, that's wonderful  He *knew*.

Alan is a brilliant name for a cat. But possibly not one I want to be bellowing over the hills and dales.

I like the name Wigeon, or Fidget. Or Pickwick.
