Typical, Sal.

Pod was beautiful and felt important etc, but reaffirmed my belief that dolphins are bastards.

I’m halfway through one of the An Inspector Singh Investigates books, as recommended by a colleague. It’s meant to be in the same vein as the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books, but set in south east Asia. It’s OK so far, though I think I’ve worked out the twist.

I'm reading I'm Sorry You Feel That Way and it has had me hooting with laughter. I don't want to put it down!

I'm reading Really Good, Actually and loving it. It's about a woman going through a breakup, and it's really well written and amusing. I think a lot of people here would like it.

I really enjoyed that Ken - it managed to be genuinely well written and really funny as well.

I've just finished Small Worlds by Caleb Azumah Nelson and loved it - he's a localish, young British-Ghanian author and I think his prose is magical. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as his first book (Open Water) but it was still wonderful. I think it comes with a playlist as well, so I need to seek that out (I need to look for the Fire Rush one as well, Pip!).

I'm reading The Book of Goose now and it's a bit weird and I'm not really sure where it is going!

The Fire Rush playlist is really good.

I’ve finished the Inspector Singh book. I was right about the twist. It was fine, but I’m not sure I’d rush to read more. It was lacking the sense of place you get from the Precious Ramotswe books.

I’ve started The Ghost Ship now. Pirates! So very up my street. :pip:

I read this last night, and it was just the thing after a couple of dire Amazon first reads.

I’m glad you liked it! The first reads can be hit & miss, I find.

I just read one I bought as it had good reviews, called Talking At Night. It had so much promise but just dragged on

I have put Black Butterflies on my To Read list. I am not doing brilliantly with Women's Prize shortlisted books this year. Trespasses was excellent, though. Hugely evocative and had moments of purely lovely writing.

I'm reading the Heart's Invisible Furies at the moment and I'm not sure, though I think I may have just hit the narrator's dip while I'm having a dip but I felt when I put it down last night that everything was just a bit too miserable. Then this morning I could see it was also funny as well as slightly horrifying. I'll keep on. :))

And I reread the Gary Disher Hirsch books, as there's a new one out in August and I wanted easy escapism. I do recommend. They're not quite Jane Harper but they're good if you like a decent quality thriller. I rate him up with Ann Cleeves and William Shaw.

I've just started the new Mark Billingham. Has he had a head transplant? It's awful, like it's written by a totally different person. I don't want to read any more.

Yeah, I wasn't that keen on it. I did think it improved though but it's nowhere near as good as his Thorne books.

I’ve just spent my Christmas book token.

I got The Marriage Portrait, The Song of Achilles (book club choice) and The Gallows Pole. I’m not sure which to read first.

Our next few books have been chosen. I think I read Vernon God Little back in the day!

August - Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
September - The Vanishing of Margaret Small by Neil Alexander
October - Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre
November - Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

I bought VGL but never read it. I think I donated it in a clear out.

I’ve just finished The Ghost Ship. It was a lot less piratey than promised.

I just finished A Today Ending by Joanna Cannon. It was unusual but I did enjoy it.

I read Lisa Jewell’s The Family Upstairs and The Family Remains back to back because I was so into the story. Speedy thrillers! Now I’m on Again, Rachel which I was trying to save for my holiday but never mind!

I honestly can't finish it. I've done 3/4 but I'm bored. The humour is really trite; it's like he's learning to write again. V disappointing but I have the new Karin Slaughter to plough through instead.

Morgs, I would go for Achilles!

I’ve just finished Somebody’s Mother, Somebody’s Daughter by Carol Ann Lee, about the women injured or killed by Peter Sutcliffe. It’s scathing about the attitudes of the police, media and even the prosecution who labelled several of the women “prostitutes” without evidence, and also of the terrible failure of the police investigation which left Sutcliffe free to kill. It’s not really about Sutcliffe and his actions, but it’s still quite a challenging read.
It’s like a normal midlife crisis only with more chandeliers and foreign languages.
