Morgs, I am so sorry. That's a bitter blow - and beyond rude of them. I hope you DO say something - if not, tell me who they are and I bloody will. :flo:

Thanks. I'm less furious today, and getting used to the idea of being economically inactive. Ironically, last year I decided to pay into the pension scheme, and if I'm reading it right there is £730 or so in there as a lump sum, plus about £250 a year. This doesn't seem right after just paying in for six months of one year, but I can't decide what's the best thing to do with it. It's not enough to make a difference as a pension, but too much to just leave there doing nothing.

In other news, I am thinking about starting to run online writing classes on Zoom, but will have the summer off whilst I think about it.

That's so rude of them, Morgs.

That is disappointing, Morganna, I'm sorry to read that. Employers can be so insensitive at times.

My own current example: IWLTS to one of my clients: "Is it too much me to ask that you actually pay me!?!"

I started tutoring this client's daughter in January. I expressed a preference to be paid in cash. As one session rolled into another (she never checked with me whether it was OK to pay me after several sessions, and I let it go), the amount she owed me piled up and she asked if she could pay some in cash in some by bank transfer. Not my preference, but not the end of the world, and I agreed. This has happened a few times and after the most recent block of sessions, she paid some in cash and was supposed to pay the rest on Friday 11th by bank transfer. I hadn't received anything by Tuesday 15th so I sent her a reminder on WhatsApp, adding to please let me know if she had any questions - she read it a few hours later. No payment and no answer to the WhatsApp. She's on holiday in Italy at the moment but that's no excuse. For what it's worth- and this shouldn't matter, but it makes it worse- she is extremely wealthy.

I had to phone my bank yesterday to ask them to increase my oredraft as I'm seriously overdrawn. The interest rate for the increased overdraft is very high, but I have no choice. Between that and my mum tiding me over (as I'm currently back in Ireland with my mum for the Easter holidays), I think I can make it til the end of the month when my other other income is paid into my account, but I am so angry about it. It shouldn't be this way. I hate asking my mum for money.

That doesn't sound right to me. I am sure you don't need it for these sort of numbers but if you want me to have a look at a statement for you then do shout mate.

I am sorry you have been treated this way, I guess they see you as a 'temp' and therefore not important. It is bound to sting.

You have mail

Yes, I was classed as an Associate Lecturer, and I totally get that this is an expendable role and that there is a business case for keeping the work in-house, but after eight years even a goodbye email would have been good.

IWLTS: if you don't like what I'm planning for dinner, feel free to host yourselves.

I have family visiting this weekend, my aunt and cousin are coming from London. I said I'd have everyone here on Saturday night and that I'd do dinner. I'm not great at hosting or cooking but I have most space, and it makes sense to do it here. I was talking to my mum about it at the weekend, and i said I thought I'd just get some roast chickens, salad stuff etc and do a buffet. My mum phoned tonight and said that she and my older brother had been talking about it, apparently my brother said he didn't fancy chicken, so my mum decided she'd order some beef joints, and we'd do a roast! I don't want to do a roast dinner on a Saturday night, I don't want all the work that'll entail. So I said this, and said my brother was welcome to host if he didn't like what was on offer! Now my mum's all offended, and saying she was just trying to help. She did agree that my original plan was better and she's probably now phoning my brother to warn him not to say anything as I'll overreact :ella:

What? That's crazy. Plus roast chicken and salads for a crowd is going to be nice, a proper beef roast for more than about five people is guaranteed to be disappointing.
If your back's against the wall, turn around and write on it.

Exactly! Plus it's meant to be nice at the weekend so hopefully we can sit outside, that's not how you do a roast dinner.

Corn on the cobs, salads & some baguette and that’s a perfect meal.

I guess it beats my husband when I’m meal planning.

Me: what sorts of things do you fancy this week?
Him: I’m not hungry.
Me: you may not be now, but famously humans eat 3x a day. Wanker.

Oh Pip, the number of times I’ve had this exact conversation. THAT IS NOT THE QUESTION I ASKED.
