Re: Read the Room
I've just finished Dream Count, which I thought I was loving but then went off by the end - I think because I really got into the first and second characters' stories, then wasn't that fussed about the final two so it definitely tailed off for me.
I also read Nathan Hill's Wellness which I enjoyed, enough to pick up his first book (The Nix) as I liked his writing style. Although I had to double check at one point he was an actual male author as there were a couple of sections where it felt so much like a female author I started doubting myself!
I'm now reading Sunrise on the Reaping :))

I've copied you and have re read one and two now. It's amazing how much of them I've completely forgotten.

I can well imagine you've forgotten a lot! A character has just popped up in book #5 who I last "met" in book #4 and I was even having trouble remembering their exact relationship to Jackson Brodie.

Re: Read the Room
 To be fair, I've been forgetting people mid book too. ;)
I've finished three now and had remembered what happened with his wife but totally forgot the outcome of the main actual mystery. I'm also glad that I didn't start it during my long train journey last week!

Haha, that would have been poor timing indeed! It is quite hard to keep track of the many characters at times. I love the way several storylines gradually intertwine but you do have to keep your focus.

Re: Read the Room
I've just finished The Names. It's a bit of a Sliding Doors story, what would have happened if a mother had taken three different paths for her son. It was excellent though - it arrived in the post this morning, and I've just finished it.

I've heard a lot of people talking about this!
I finished The Cracked Mirror last night, it was really good.

I am rereading Never Let Me Go because I’m going to a book club meeting on Monday and I really loved it when I read it years ago and want to talk passionately about it with other people.

I saw a guy just starting that on the Tube the other day, Haze, and had to stop myself from excitedly telling him that I love that book.
I'm on the third of the Veronica Rosenthal series by Sergio Olguïn. And hoping that the plot is better than the second.

I’ve given up on lots recently, or at least, put to one side. But I have read Gliff by Ali Smith, which was kind of awesomely Ali Smith-ish.

Never Let Me Go is amazing!
I'm reading The Full English by Stuart Maconie, I've not read any of his stuff for years but I'm enjoying this.

I didn't entirely get it, but I always feel like I've had a cuppa with a friend when I finish an Ali Smith so I liked it immensely anyway.Pippedydeadeye wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 10:46 am I’ve given up on lots recently, or at least, put to one side. I have been re-reading childhood books for comfort: The Silver Sword, Fireweed and some Point Horrors I found in a charity shop. It is a real joy to approach these with adult eyes.

Re: Read the Room
I'm reading Dream Count, which I'm really enjoying, but it's a bit tense as it's due back at the library soon so I'm not sure if I'll finish in time.
What are the Point Horrors like, Lily? I loved them at the time but not sure what I'd make of them now. Probably too scary for me for one thing.

Re: Read the Room
Do you have to remember the previous Jackson Brodie books to make sense of the latest? Was planning on taking it on holiday with me but maybe not if I have to revise the rest first.
Never Let Me Go is probably in my top ten novels.

Re: Read the Room
Yes, I didn't remember anything and still enjoyed it, although I have now gone back to the start as I hadn't realised I'd forgotten everything!

Re: Read the Room
When I read the new Jackson Brodie I read the last one, but I didn't start at the beginning. It helped, but I didn't really need to.
I have read Jane Gardam's Old Filth trilogy, as she died recently, which reminded me that Old Filth had been on my wish list for ages. I really enjoyed them, but you could happily stop after the first, as the other two aren't really as good. And then to treat myself after an insane few weeks I bought Sarah Moss's new one, Ripeness. I love Sarah Moss. She's so very perceptive and her prose is absolutely lovely.
Ghost Wall stayed with me for aaaages afterwards.

Re: Read the Room
I read Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout in a day. I don’t know why I’d not read anything by her before, it’s totally up my street.
