Hurrah that the ironing trick worked. I've used it too. Buy some coasters for your husband to use (my mum actually complained that I didn't have enough coasters when she was here over christmas :ella: )

I don't think he'll dare to vandalise the furniture any time soon :)). I could have killed him - three bloody rings! Ironically, he'd put the mug on the table whilst he looked for a coaster :ella:. I have felt ones in the shape of a sheep, which were right in front of him. I've only had them for about 100 years.

I still don't understand why there are no iron-shaped heat marks, but I'm happy that the magic worked.

Well. After a day of faffing about (the lights take ages to put together) and another trip to the shop (half an hour each way) we have a solution. We took the Big Light back in as a replacement had been sourced, but found that the new one was exactly the same as the original. We hadn't taken the floor lamp in, as to do that we'd have had to disassemble it to get it in the car, so we were sent home again to take more photos of the lights side by side, and more of the shade from the Big Light on the floor lamp base, which involved much huffing and puffing from M. I wasn't convinced that there was any point in this, as we'd already sent in pics, but it did some sort of trick, as it turns out that the floor lamp shade is 'wrong' (the assistant insisted that it's not faulty, but 'wrong' ). So the upshot is that we are getting the new shade, which we've seen side by side with the original one and know to be a match), and we can keep the 'wrong' one, as it's no good to the shop, on account of its 'wrongness', (although it's definitely not faulty - oh no :)) ).

By the time we got to this point, it was too late to go and get the new one, so it will be tomorrow at the earliest before we get it sorted, but at least I know I wasn't seeing things. The finished result will be two shades that look less gold than the original floor lamp one, but when seen together have a gold tinge to them, and look lovely. It was the bright gold floor lamp that was creating the problem. The End (I hope)

I don’t know. I have the floor lamp we used before I embarked on the mission to get these ones. I’m not really sure where I’d put it though. Or it might work as a pendant lamp in a bedroom, but I think that would be overkill really. I’ll offer it to J or S, or consider eBaying it.

S bought this 220cm long outdoor dining table this afternoon while I was queuing up to return 2 cushion covers at the Conran shop this afternoon. It's closing down so it was half price but he hadn't even measured it and they didn't offer delivery and it has to be picked up within a week!

The table was delivered by a man in a van this Wednesday and on Friday I popped in to the shop again on my way home and found the matching bench in the clearance sale! It was still in the box so I just jumped in a cab with it

This might be the best thread to ask a silly question. If looking for something to put a lamp on, what would you use as each terms? I have a table lamp on an old DVD storage thingy. It is 90cm tall and about 30 wide. I want to move it (without the lamp) to the dining room so M doesn't have DVDs all over the place, but need something to go in its place. It can't be much wider because of the position, and I don't want it much higher or lower than 90cm, although there is a bit of wriggle room there. The lamp that sits on it is maybe 25cm across at the base, so it has to accommodate that in both width and depth.
Lamp tables seem to be half the height, books cases are too wide, and most DVD tower things are far too narrow. Searching under 'pedestals' brings up acrylic gallery furniture, and 'lamp stands' standard lamps. In amongst that lot I've found a couple of vaguely suitable things, but there must be something that fits what I want with less compromise. Does anyone have any ideas, please?
