Sports Events 2023
Another new year, same title :))
Chart your wins, losses and just barely making it through your event. We'll cheer you on from the sidelines and commiserate when it doesn't go to plan.
I have a few scheduled already.
Jan 1st - Lyle Mile - Duo 11:53
Jan 8th -Sx5 Bellahouston Park 5km - Duo 27:41
Jan 22nd - Sx5 Queens Park 5km - Duo
Mar 19th - DAAA 10 miler - Duo
May 4th - Babcock 10k series Helensburgh - Duo
May 14th - Babcock Shettleston 10k - Duo
May 25th - Babcock Dumbarton 10k - Duo
I'm trying to get my running chops back out on a regular basis and races motivate me to do so.
1st up was the Lyle Mile, a mile (obvs) up a very steep and winding hill, it was the first time I'd done it although I've gone up under my own steam plenty of times as it's very local. I just wanted to get up in one piece which I did and it wasn't as bad as I thought. An excellent way to get out and about when I'd normally lie in bed.
Today was the penultimate in the best series ever. This is the only race on tarmac but hilly as ever with a huge set of stairs to navigate. That and the huge hill that we had to do twice. Got around with a course PB so chuffed with that.

The two you’ve done sound so hard, Duo!
I’ve got XC next weekend, but as I’m still in recovery mode and being careful not to derail my marathon training, I’ll be taking it really easy.

I’ve limited the races I’ve entered pre-marathon this year. I may enter a 20 miler if there’s a convenient one at the right time in the run-up.
Halstead is the marathon I trained for in 2020, so it’d be nice to get it done this year

You're brave TC!
The last in my series was Sunday and it was as muddy and hilly as expected. Course change from this year and underfoot conditions tackling the infamous Queen's Park hill twice with a gradient of 7.6% nearly killed me as it was all boggy trail and then the final hurdle of the steps and final hill.
Great fun but tough so no course pb.

My relay went well 6km or 3.7 miles on a flat course around a loch. There was a sausage dog walk happening and one of our runners got injured getting tangled up in a retractable lead.
Anyways it's quite a boring run but a good PB route. I pushed myself and as soon as I saw I had a 5km PB (now in the 25mins mark) I knew I'd get a course PB.

I did this race as part of my marathon training, aiming to run it consistently at GMP (11:15 mm). I had a terribly negative outlook when I got up this morning, and might well have sacked it off, but I’d offered a friend a lift.
In the end it was actually a really lovely race, and lovely weather, and I managed to stay on pace and get a PB into the bargain (all my previous halves have been fairly slow!)

That sounds ideal, Moj.
I had a stomach bug at the tail end of this week so I could've seen this far enough but had agreed to do it, my club paid the entry fee and the race is on my doorstep.
I tried to keep pace with a much stronger runner and failed but all I wanted was a PB which I achieved so I'm happy enough.

Another weekend, another race. I haven't trained for this and wondered if I'd be able to do it. It was an out-and-back over a canal path. Lovely scenery and pretty much flat. Hadn't done much training but wanted to come in under the 1:30 which I managed to do and I'm over the moon as I've broken that mental barrier.

I wasn’t sure I was going to run this as I’ve been struggling with a serious niggle the last couple of weeks, but I decided to turn up and just try and have a comfortable run, pain permitting.
Seems like a week of rest has really helped as I was able to run with no pain, and at a reasonable pace for me.

That's amazing Moj. Well done on that time.
I have a race tonight, I can see it far enough but I'll turn up and try not to fall over.

Duo, your cheeky little 5k tonight looked absolutely off the chart too. Was that basically a mountain climb?!

Re: Sports Events 2023
It was insane - the hardest thing I've ever done.
It was part of the Bog and Burn series that they do over here. It's part of the Scottish Hill Runners spring/summer schedule. They basically organise races up Munros and Corbetts so the lowest elevation they do is just under 200m. Kaim Hill is just under 400m I think and I did it as it's fairly local to me, around 18 miles further down the coast so really easy to get to.
No training for it at all other than a few tarmac hills around here. The first section was an over 15% gradient. It was also really boggy although the past few days here have been dry the previous rain hadn't had time to evaporate. Sheer downhills and very technical fell running.
I was totally out of my depth. I jumped over a boggy bit and fell into another boggy bit that went up to mid-thigh
1:05:00 was my time but everyone said how bad the conditions were as the ground was very churned up.
