I read The Hike by Lucy Clarke over the last few days, its a bit like Lucy Foley stuff, easy to read but a bit predictable.

I’ve abandoned A Thousand Ships. It just wasn’t doing it for me and I don’t have to finish books and you can’t make me.

I've had that on my Kindle unread for ages Pip. You don't inspire me to give it a go.
Anyway, I just found a Georgette Heyer that I had never read before. The Tollgate. I liked it.

Natalie Haynes the woman seems really lovely & very knowledgeable, but I feel I’d get more from a Wikipedia trawl. There was so much jumping around and I just didn’t care.

I’m reading Firefly Lane after watching the tv series. The wrong way to do it but it’s interesting to see what they changed.

Re: Reading Heart Liberals
I've finished:
How the Scots Invented the Modern World: Arthur Herman - so interesting but a bit dry. My home town was a major player in the story of Scotland so gets major coverage which was nice.
Fault Lines: Doug Johnstone - after the chat on here about him, it was really enjoyable but I guessed (I tend just to let the story take me to the conclusion rather than figure it out) the twist early on. It won't put me off reading more.
I've also read the first two books (audible freebies) of a series by Joy Ellis concerning a female DI Nikki Galena - they're absolute nonsense but just getting some additional reads in before my Audible account auto cancels as I've decided that I'll stick to Spotify.

I read a Doug Johnstone book the other week and it was a crock of shite. The Space Between Us.

I forced myself to finish this for book club but could have easily thrown it aside at various points. Literally towards the end!sally maclennane wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 10:41 amYes, I agree about that. I enjoyed the gaming stuff more than I thought I would, given that I've never played any computer games in my life!Flora Poste wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 10:38 am I've read Tomorrow, Tomorrow etc Sal! I really enjoyed it and was fascinated by the creative and story/ world building parts of computer gaming which I'd never really appreciated before - I did think it had one plot twist too many though.

I finished the middle hockey book and it was okay to good but I got a bit fed up of the philosophising by the end. I think I'll read the third at some point but not immediately. I've started Miss Smilla's Sense for Snow after it was recommended by a Guardian article about good winter reads and I'm enjoying it so far. Nicely written and very much less philosophising.

It (T&T&T) was a funny one. Took a bit to get going, enjoyed it for a while, slowly decided I couldn’t give a shit about any of the horrible characters, actively hated it.
Do keep track of how many times you have to look up a word and then a sub-section of where the dictionary definition means the sentence still doesn’t make sense!

What’s thrown me about it is that Squeak is doing Macbeth at the moment, and Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow is the start of one of his soliloquies.

I wonder if I'll experience it the same way. So far I really like Sam and Sadie. Sam reminds me of my old uni housemate who now lives in San Francisco as a...game designer.wendy james wrote: ↑Sat Dec 02, 2023 6:16 pm It (T&T&T) was a funny one. I really want to read T, T & T or whatever it is. I finished The Tide Between Us about irish indentured slaves in Jamaica and a family saga spanning the Atlantic and decades. Next up is Britney Spears.

Yes, I enjoyed it Dutchie and will read the others in due course but it's a standalone book so I could just stop at this one.
