I would assume that the £120 is before tax as it's not really possible for an employer to tell you what your net pay will be as there are variables that are unknown to them i.e. your tax code. Also, I don't understand how you get to £3 an hour from £120 per day, unless you are working a 24 hour day (which I wouldn't put past you! )

I totally agree with sal's phrasing of your response.

Because I'm really thick. I am too embarrassed to go into my maths. Anyway basically the day rate he's offering is £509 a week after tax which is fine for me. Lower than what I was on, but fine. I really don't understand how much it is in the first place, all I care about is what lands in my bank account.

It's not surprising I can't get a job with my appalling maths and general lack of logic in that regard.

If you accept 120 as a day rate, I would only work for 6 hours. An hourly rate of £20 is kind of acceptable. A day is as long as YOU want it to be.

Make it clear you will only be working 6 hours and what those hours will be and that anything outside of those hours requested by them will be charged extra.

Keep a log of what you do and how long it takes.

He's not employing you, you are contracting in, yeah?

Yes, are you able to make it an hourly rate? A 'day' seems very fluffy to me, I've always charged by the hour for that reason. I essentially say my day will be 7.5 hours per day at £x an hour and I will do 3 days per week - anything more than that is therefore chargeable.

Also if he is saying it's a zero hour contract, you have rights.

Think very carefully about this. He has made you so unhappy and you do have a breather to find something else because of the money from your grandparents.

If you take it & then things go wrong again (very likely since this guy is a chancer) you’d have to leave again which would destroy your confidence even more.

Thank you for your replies and the useful info about zero hours!

I really really can't turn half decent money down. My grandparents' money will not last very long. So I've had to take this up. I feel a bit freer that it is on my terms though.

I've been offered an interview for the theatre role, thank God. They said they were "very impressed" by my application, which is the nicest feedback I've had since I left my old company and it made me cry in a good way for once. It still doesn't mean much as I may not be suitable for the role, but to know someone was impressed by me instead of Not is comforting.

I think the theatre role would be excellent for you. When is the interview? If you don't want to say, I want to wish you all the luck with it, you deserve something good to happen for you work wise.

Yes, good luck, Lily! Whatever the outcome, I'm glad it's given you a boost. And I hope the digital work for the other company is going well and not causing you any stress.

Thank you all :hugh: It was an initial "chat" which they are performing with all short-listed candidates this week. Then they will short-list further for interview. They want someone in position ASAP.

It seemed to go well, although you never can tell can you... she said I was clearly passionate about the place, but I am passionate about all sorts of stuff which doesn't necessarily do me any favours.

I've had 4 more rejections in the last few days so I am anticipating another! Ha!

Chin up, Lily, it sounds like it went well and passion can go a long way - it stands out against the candidates who just want a job.
If you get shortlisted, I'm sure there are loads of practical examples that will back up your passion! Crossing fingers for you.

And fwiw, the job market is really tough. Whilst i'm in a job I'm enjoying, I would like a higher salary and certainly have the experience for it, so I've applied for all sorts of things I'm highly qualified for, and not gotten them. Last year I felt like I couldn't catch a cold.
So, you're not the only one, at all.
Jesus loves you. Everyone else thinks you're an asshole.

I'm so sorry you went through that too. Are you able to ask for feedback from any of these companies?

My friend has just got a £20k pay rise by moving jobs, I can't compute that amount of money. I fear I'll be skint and crap forever.

It feels endless. I thought some places might be a bit more desperate and take me! I'm just recovering from norovirus on top of everything else, was able to go to the theatre work today and got a parking ticket for 7 minutes the bastards and I just sat and cried. I feel like a massive failure, I know I'm not in the grand scheme of things but I'm so over this now. I want to be back in my manic phase when I couldn't stop Doing things... I've just run out of energy and mmph. My friend's day I need some rest but I've been resting for about 9 months now. :mog: I miss my colleagues and friends, the world I've built up for nearly 20 years.

Last night I dreamt I was talking to my grandparents' ghosts which probably didn't help.

On the plus side Rosco clearly sussed I needed to properly relax, and after 3 years deigned to sit on the sofa next to me again. I dozed curled up next to him and he didn't pull away in horror. Every cloud!
