Our neighbours have a full well in their sitting room  I can't remember for sure, but I think it just has a grid across the top. The sitting room is a converted barn, so the well wouldn't have been in the house originally.
I was wondering that too. The ground is quite a stable and even temperature isn't it? but then, y'know, its a fuck off big hole in the ground, surely its cold?
I don't know, I was thinking that myself (I've only visited them twice, in the summer for an hour or so). It's an absolutely huge room, but they have underfloor heating plus a large open fire. I don't think I've ever seen such a large room in a house - they have a sideboard thing, then a dining table that must seat 12, then some empty space, then a seating area with 3 sofas!
That does look a bit ridiculous. It'll be for planning I reckon, they don't like just plain old rows of terraced houses all looking the same, so they do stuff like that instead.
The woman who owns it is an interesting character by all accounts, offering a cut of the sale price of a different property to a developer if he managed to get planning permission, then declaring the deal was off the day after he got it. Silly man never got anything in writing (although eventually won a court case against her).
